Hi, fellow surf guitar aficionados. The Insanitizer's new frenetic 17-song CD "Whimsical Surf" is now out

It's available on guitar9.com, CDBaby.com, deepeddy.net, dblcrown.com, and grumps-garage.com. If you want to skip that marvelous cover art downloads are available from iTunes, EMusic, Amazon, etc.

The music is deep, detailed, and highly varied, so your ears will not tire with repeated listening. I listen to it every day. It's 100% instro; some rhythmic voices appear on one song (Hot Sauce) but they are from a guitar synth.

Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF

Back in Vintage Times, AKA the early days of television, one of the Saturday morning programs was "Andy's Gang" run by Andy Devine. (No relation to John Waters' female impersonator Divine). In the cast was Froggy Gremlin, whose role was to cause comic confusion. He often did this with his Magic Twanger, which also produced a loud boing.

Froggy's Magic Twanger uses the vibrato arm comically but musically. You can hear it on Myspace. I played it on a Steinberger (USA). Anyone else play surf on a Steinberger?

I don't know. I've heard Conrad's (Insanitizers) CD, and he has achieved good guitar tones throughout. I think it has more to do with the person behind the gear than just the gear itself, though both are important. A person with a good ear for tone should be able to dial in a decent tone, at least based on the limitations of the equipment, on almost anything. Who knows? Maybe he swapped out the pickups or made some other adjustments to improve the sound.

I agree with Jeff. It does no one any service by not being willing to call a spade a spade. This is not good surf music. I'm not even sure it's surf music. And the guitar sounds are not good.

I listened too. I understand that they're not going for a surf sound and I'm very capable of judging it on it's own merits and not try to pigeon hole it. I have to say though that neither the writing or recording quality merits the hype that the band has presented for itself. I think if one does a side by side comparison of a Insanitizer song next to a Slacktone or Insect Surfers or Pollo Del Mar (all non trad surf) you'll find them lacking quite a bit. Of which most non-trad bands would too, but most bands don't hold themselves in such high esteem.

I'm not saying it's terrible, there's some interesting ideas on there. This is a fine initial release for a band, minus the hype and the seeming lack of humility. Also I can appreciate the sense of humor they're bringing to the music. I'd like to hear how the band progresses once they find a drummer and upgrade to a recording studio with an engineer.

Ted, I notice you don't say the Insanitizers are good music.

Despite subjectivity of taste, a knowledgeable person can say something about the quality of a particular art. I recognize that there's a fair amount of surf music that is done well but which is just not to my taste. I would never put that down. But in this instance, it's clearly not good. Again, we're not doing anyone any favors by being too sensitive or polite to admit that.

But hey, if any of you out there like it, let's hear from you!

I'm a big fan of "on the Fringe" surf bands.
and I don't care for this at all.

the tones(or lack there of) of the guitar is especially harsh and annoying.

I was not saying that everyone into fringe surf bands would like this.. just saying that would be the crowd that would most likely enjoy this. Anyway, good on them for putting what they do out there in the world. It takes courage to do so and that in itself is commendable.
