Love them both replaced a champ 600 in my down stairs practice room with the Super champ, great clean and fullness at low levels for practice. But the big thing I learned researching the HRD was putting a ART MP tube --preamp in the effects loop and then getting to use the full features of the HRD III amp at bedroom volumes. Since the ART MP is a tube preamp and it has a guitar setting it works great to knock down the volume so I can set it at higher levels and use the clean, drive more drive channels with out killing all my grass! Used a 20% off coupon and got them both for under $700.

Nice! I'm trying to decide how much trouble I'd get in if I took back the Mustang amp I just bought and got a super champ xd instead. I want to like the Mustang, for 100 bucks it can do a lot but it's just not inspiring to me.
I'd get the HRD but man it's LOUD!
How'd you get Guitar center to honor the 20% coupon?

I bought a Vibro-Champ XD about two and a half years ago as a home practice amp and still use it almost daily. The original intention was to buy a Blues Junior because of its built-in tank, but when I tried them side by side in the store the digital reverb (spring reverb setting) of the Vibro-Champ sounded better. On top of that, the used BJr was $450 and the brand new VCXD was less than $250. Never regretted this decision for a moment.

I think I'm going to take the mustang back and get the xd. If the reverb doesn't do it for me, maybe I'll get the frv-1 pedal? Does it sound/feel lime a tube amp?

I've heard more praise for this pedal than anything, even by people who know what good reverb is. Search this site for FRV-1 and you'll see lengthy discussions here.

I bought the xd, used today. (175!) I likey! It just sounds fatter and livelier than the Mustang. Don't get me wrong, for 100 dollar amp I don't think you could beat it, but it didn't make me want to play.
Next stop Fender FRV-1!
I think for a budget set up it'll deliver a good sound...for me, at least.

In the future, you should look into buying a replacement speaker. I put a weber 10F150T in mine and it made a pretty significant difference.
The reverb is digital and is nothing to write home about. I would look into buying a frv-1 or better yet, a real tank if you can afford it (you won't regret it a bit).
The amp sounds best running through the all tube clean channel with the onboard effects off IMO. But for just practicing, the onboard effects and modelling are fun to mess around with.

How quiet can the Super Champ XD be and still get a decent tone? I have an Ampeg J12T right now and I use it on volume level 1, looking for a practice amp that I can use at a quiet level and still enjoy some tube tone.

Mine doesn't start sounding pretty good until past 3. It sounds best past 4.5 IMO.

Thanks - that is helpful advice.. probably too loud for the space I would be using it in.

I think there is mis communication. On the XD settings of 3-5 sound good without being real loud. I use settings of 3-5 as practice volumes. It also depends on the guitar so probably 5 if using strat, 3 if using lP.
