I really like this pedal. However, I also like the Strymon blueSky Reverberator. Does anyone here have experience with both to help me make my decision? If the Reverberator can make the sounds that the Surf Rider does, I will get it (since it appears to be much more versatile). Thanks in advance! |

I'd have to go with the Boss FRV-1 over that. The Boss sounds better and costs less. Not bad, but $250?! If you're going that strong save up and get a tank I say. |

If you want a pedal for surf, get the FRV-1. The Reverberator is a very cool pedal for plates & types of reverb. I just haven't heard anything that sounds as close to a Fender tank as the Boss, and the Strymon costs nearly as much as a used tank —Shawn Martin |

Thanks for the opinions, guys! I'll take a good look at that Boss pedal. I'm still tempted by the versatility of the Strymon though. While I'm very interested in surf guitar, I like a wide variety of styles and have a very limited gear budget. |

The Boss is versitle as well, it just seems that most buy it for the 63 Tank Surf sound. You can dial in a very good "Freddie King" kind of reverb as well. |

Funny how we all hear tone differently. I REALLY like the sound of this pedal, as well as the versatility in being able to shape a variety of tones. I have owned the FRV-1 - didn't like it and sold it. Even after tweaking it "twelve ways to Sunday", I could not get it to sound good to my ears. I currently own a '62 reissue tank, but it's not really doing it for me either. I actually prefer the on board reverb of my Hot Rod De-Ville over the tank -at least the one that I own - maybe if I had an original Fender unit from the 60's I'd have a different opinion. Still, when it comes to gigging, I'd much prefer finding the right pedal over lugging around and setting up a tank. But hey, that's just me. |

This pedal sounds bad for Fender Reverb unit emulation.... I would go for the BOSS pedal over this and I'm sure it's cheaper. |

That doesn't sound great... It actually really damages the tone of the amp and guitar. It's a decent reverb, not tank level, but a good reverb. However... as previously mentioned it really effects how the guitar and amp sound. |

Well, I went to GC today and demoed the Boss FRV-1. It had a good twangy sound to it, but I really felt like it was a one-trick pony. I'm going to try out the Strymon and just return it if I can't get the sound I want out of it. I'll report back with my opinions. |

I bought a BSR and ended up sending it back. It did not do a good surf reverb. It was good for ambient, wash-type reverb but not as good as my T-Rex Roommate. I have yet to hear any pedal capture the "ping" and "drip" of a stand alone tube unit. |

Well, after an hour or so of messing around, I'm not super impressed by the blueSky Reverberator. I just ordered a Digitech Hardwire reverb, so I'm going to compare them back-to-back before making a decision. The Strymon is most likely going back, though. I want more than just a spring reverb (thus no FRV-1 or Surf Rider), but it still has to have a good spring sound. The search continues... |

Well, I got my Digitech/Hardwire FRV-7 in the mail today. I rushed home and tried it out over lunch. It's amazing. Granted, I am very inexperienced, so I don't have the ear that most of you have. However, it does a spring reverb that's good enough for me, and it has a lot of other reverb types. It's very configurable for different sounds. In a nutshell, it's exactly what I've been looking for - great surf sound without being a one-trick pony. Anyone shopping for reverb pedals, give the Hardwire FRV-7 a listen! (I'd make a video demo but I suck.) EDIT: Forgot to add, the blueSky is definitely going back, in case you didn't pick up on that already. |

Bump. Just seen the proguitarshop and eraserhead demo's of the surf rider reverb.... still no love here for it? To my ears it sounds similar to the Earthquaker Ghost Echo or Malekko Spring Chicklet. It has a decay on it which is more natural than springy, but I think it sounds good. Infact I kind of prefer my Ghost Echo to my FRV-1, though the latter has that COSM modelled 'dripping' spring reverb tank sound, so I know the other pedals don't have that 'legitimate' spring sound but they have a tone I'm really starting to like and the surf rider seems to have it to, but with a little more tweakability with the level and tone controls. So no more opinions on the rider? |
