Could be. Wink

To be honest, that comp kinda soured me a bit on tracking down that early Bluejeans stuff, but I'll have to keep an eye out for this one from the sounds of it. Thanks for the heads up!

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Is anyone familiar with this Comp? Is it any good?
image
There's a song in this one called "Space Express" by a 60's Eliki band called The Savage. I hear it's a cool tune but I was just wondering if anyone's familiar with this.

The Deadbeats

Not sure about the rest of the comp but I'd bet it's almost all vocals. That Savage song is great! It's definitely in the style of The Atlantics, with some really raging drums.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Okay, it's splitting hairs time again here at SG101, so I thought I would ad this little morsel you might dig. I'm sure some of you know but Eleki isn't exactly the same as GS. Notice that the title of this comp is "GS, I Love you". GS refers to "Group Sounds" or music inspired mostly by The Beatles and British Invasion. Whereas Eleki means Electric Guitar music like The Ventures.

^^^What he said.

Some of the GS bands had some pretty cool instros - especially The Spiders. (GREAT instro cover of Cliff Richard's "Dynamite.")

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Aahh weak! I wasn't really expecting Japanese garage music but maybe some eliki. If this comp contained stuff like that Takeshi song "Burning, Burning" from the "Let's Go Terry" album, then it would have been worth checking out. BTW does anyone know of any comps of recent or 60's eliki music?

I would recommend starting with the first volume which is the greatest of the two in my opinion. Several of my all time favorite GS songs can be found on it including "Let's Go Rangers" by The Rangers which also happens to have a strong eleki influence.

I can also strongly recommend volume 3 which isn't a various artists compilation but a great collection of the Spiders output.

Making a distinction between eleki and GS is definitely not "splitting hairs".

Damn, I guess the show we did on eleki wasn't 100% pure!

Thanks Klas, I did read this whole thread a couple weeks ago but don't remember anything about comps. I'll check again though thanks.

The Deadbeats

If you want comps that have just eleki (or mostly eleki), I'd recommend Tokyo Eleki Battle and Beat a Go-Go.

I can't think of any that focus entirely on modern bands playing in this style ... mostly because very, very few bands do.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Thanks Warren. I don't mind if it's modern or not. Pretty much anything would be good. I've been all over this stuff for the past month! Thanks for the info.

The Deadbeats

I second Warren's comp recommendations. Here are a couple more from the thread:

Klas
I was wrong when stating above that the "Kachinuki Eleki Gassen" comp contained 5-6 Sharp Five tracks. After running the Japanese tracklist through an online translator it turned out that the Sharp Five only had 2 of the included tracks (9 and 23). Also don't be fooled by the cover art which gives the impression that the comp will be about the later 60s Japanese GS sounds which it isn't. All tracks are mid 60s instros.

Kachinuki Eleki Gassen

  1. Pipe line (??? and blue jeans inside temple)
  2. Caravan (Nobuo Kamei and the ??????)
  3. Diamond head (Qiao and knight six Ono,Lotus seeing Yoshio,Tadaaki Fujita,Tashiro Hisashi Masaru)
  4. ??????? sky (Kayama male three and the ??????)
  5. Crewel sea (the ??????)
  6. ?????? No.1 (??? and blue jeans inside temple)
  7. Twisted (the Lotus)
  8. Memory of day of summer (the Giants)
  9. ??where the Beatles come!??!??! (Inoue sect filial piety and sharp five)
  10. Riding in a car ticket of tear (Qiao and knight six Ono, Lotus seeing Yoshio, Tadaaki Fujita, Tashiro Hisashi Masaru)
  11. As for rust dance in me (the ??????????)
  12. ???? of pathos (the ??????)
  13. Search idling (Nobuo Kamei and ??????)
  14. Bulldog twist (the Lotus)
  15. Monkey Cray Gee (Kayama male three and the ??????)
  16. Beat No.1 (????) (??? and blue jeans inside temple)
  17. It is sad, it comes and asks (the ??????)
  18. Paradise ? go & go (the ??????)
  19. The walk ??? run (emergency turn) (??? and the blue jeans inside the temple)
  20. Hot docking (the ??????)
  21. Black sand beach (Kayama male three and the ??????)
  22. 10 Homicide of turn town (Nobuo Kamei and ??????)
  23. The Sidewinder (Inoue sect filial piety and sharp five)
  24. Destiny (SYMPHONY No.5) (??? and blue jeans inside temple)

Question marks are Japanese characters that the translator couldn't handle. (??? and blue jeans inside temple) and (Kayama male three and the ??????) are of course Takeshi Terauchi and his Blue Jeans and Yuzo Kayama and the Launchers respectively. The translation for some of the covers turned out quite funny. For example "Hot Docking" is the Astronauts' "Hot Doggin" Laughing here done by the Spacemen.

CaptainSpringfield
Found this tracklist for that comp on the msato Eleki site. The translation's a bit clearer, though I do prefer "Homicide of Turn Town."

(1)Pipeline(Terry & his Bluejeans)
(2)Caravan(KAMEI NOBUO & The Spaceman)
(3)Diamond Head(OOHASHI & Night Six)
(4)Violet Sky(YUZO KAYAMA and Launchers)
(5)Cruel Sea(The Spaceman)
(6)Misirlou(Terry & his Bluejeans)
(7)Twisted(The Rotaus)
(8)NATU-NO HI-NO OMOIDE(The Giants)
(9)Hard Days Night(Munetaka Inoue and his Sharp Five)
(10)Ticket To Ride(OOHASHI & Night Six)
(11)Last Dance with Me(The Guitar Playboys)
(12)KARERIA(The Spaceman)
(13)La plus belle pour aller danser(KAMEI NOBUO & The Spaceman)
(14)Bulldog Twist(The Rotaus)
(15)Monkey Crazy(YUZO KAYAMA and Launchers)
(16)Misirlou(Terry & his Bluejeans)

imageHere's an interesting eleki comp that unfortunately seems to be out of print. I've tried to order it without any success even though it's still listed as available. Short sound clips from all the 28 tracks can be found here:

http://www.neowing.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=TECN-25672

Be sure to check out track 26 which is a cover of "The Eagle" (Al Casey, Astronauts). Track 21 is a fun instro cover of "G.I. Blues" (Elvis). Track 28 is the awesome vocal (!) version of "Movin" (Astronauts). Among other great tracks are no. 7 and 27.

I haven't had any luck tracking down Eleki A Go-Go, either. Someday, though ...

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Here you go: http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00005HLTQ/ (Only 1 left in stock)

I got mine a couple of years ago after something like the third try. It's a really good eleki comp although not as great as the similar Beat A Go-Go in my opinion.

I just got this in the mail over two weeks ago and haven't stopped listening to it since. This box set has ALL of The Sharp Five's Columbia LPs from 1967 to 1970. Albums are remastered in 24 bit/196kHz. Classical Sensation, Haru No Umi, Sharp Five Go Go 1 & 2, Koga Melody, Screen Go Go, etc. are included.

So far Disc 1, 2 & 6 are my faves. Koga Melody is my favorite LP of the set.
Highly recommended!
