Almost forgot to mention what a great guy Jered at BigFoot FX (he makes the Spaghetti Western Fuzz) is.
Back in March my fx board was stolen/lost. I emailed Jered to see if he had any more Spaghetti Western fuzzes in stock. In less than an hour he wrote back that he had done an internet search and had found my Fuzz. It had just went up on the Guitar Center used equipment page near my house.
He had passed up a sale to help me out. Needless to say I was completely stunned.
If anyone is on the fence about buying a Spaghetti Western Fuzz, consider his customer service.

I've weighed in on it before, but a big +1 to the Spaghetti Western Fuzz. It's a great pedal. I'm thinking about picking up one of Bigfoot Fx's vibrato pedals for shits and giggles.

To me fuzz is all about 60s sounds. I have a Maestro Fuzz-Tone RI as well as a Fuzzbrite. The former does a great job on covering the sounds of the early to mid 60s while the latter does the mid to later part of the decade equally good.

I bought a Fuzzrite clone on ebay a while back. I love it.

Yep, the Fuzzbrite was used for the Angry Breed recordings while we used the Maestro for the few fuzz tunes on our second album.

I think I am gonna to try the FZ5 out. It seems like a versatile pedal.
Picked up a Boss FZ5 used for 50 bucks at Guitar Center today and I was plesantly surprised! The middle or "M" Mode setting gets pretty close to the Maestro Fuzztone type sound. I played along to Hal Blaine's 1963 Fuzz-filled Hot Rod LP "Dueces, T's, Roadsters & Drums" and though not exact, it sounded pretty darn close to it...

I just added a third fuzz to my other two and think that I now have all the fuzz sounds I possibly need. It's a clone (called Unpleasant Companion by Fredric Effects) of the Shin-ei FY-2 Companion Fuzz which was used by many of the Japanese GS groups of the late 60's. Sounds totally sick, haha.

I think it is more a distorsion pedal than a fuzz, but with certains (and extreme) settings the bixonic expandora can give a guitar with single pickups the nastiest and craziest fuzzy brown tones I have ever heard.

The Univox Superfuzz does it for me. I've had mine since 1967 and it simply blows away any other fuzz or distortion I've ever had or ever tried.

I recently tested the Greenhouse Effects Remedy Fuzz.
It's a local hand made build, also sells in the US. I was very impressed- versatile sounds, crazy gain, superb quality.

Agreed. I picked one of these up last week and I like it. Had a new fuzz tune in mind that my Fuzzrite didn't quite sound right on, but I think the FZ5 in the "M" mode will work perfect for it.

I've had one for a couple years. The ability to boost the maestro really helps. The more boost, the less sputter, and you can really dial in exactly the amount sputter you want. Turn it all the way up, and it's just any old fuzz and loses its charm, but if you are careful you can really control it.

I may have posted about this earlier, but for someone looking for a cool but not totally traditional fuzz sound, I heavily recommend the Devi Ever Vintage Fuzz Master. There's aspects to its sound that are evocative of old school 60's fuzz, but it's also kinda crazy sounding.
I can't find any good samples online. I've got a link below to a song my band uses it on, but it's not exactly surfy, or 100 percent representative of the sound of the pedal. But for starters, here it is:

At the beginnings of each verse, and the solo 3/4 through. That's the VFM into a Bud Wah into a Muff. Lots of fuzz on the album. Born Mental is a Devi Ever Hyperion for most of the fuzz, with a Muff during the solo. And Julie is a Muff, with a Muff into a Small Clone for the solo.
Those are rough mixes, so try not to get hung up on the crappy vocals or mixing. But I figured it might be helpful to include them on this thread, because of the prominent use of 3 different fuzzes.

I think any of the old 60's fuzz boxes (or modern clones) will get you there. The Maestro fuzz tone, fuzzrite etc. Maybe not the fy-2 shin-ei though, but it's still passable. Basically any 'zero sustain' fuzz that's not a fuzz face. If you're into DIY google "Green Bomb" fuzzrite. That seems pretty cool and wasn't named after 'Greenbaumb' by accident. 
For more modern pedals, I'd guess maybe the Catalinbread Merkin? Or the Homebrew Electronics UFO fuzz (which is an octave fuzz, but in the non-octave mode it's got a similar tone). Actually, a good octave fuzz with the octave either off or blended right down sounds pretty good.

Just checked out the UFO demo vid from pgs, and I think I know the next pedal I'm gonna be picking up. Seems really versatile.
