Permalink What is the effect used by Big Surf

Can some one help me here. What is the effect that the band Big Surf is using on this song called Blue Surf. It sort of sounds like a chours pedal, but there is an almost 12 string underwater sound to it.
Any Ideas?

Thanks
Joel

Sounds almost like an electric vibrato. Pretty close to the vibrato sound you can get on a Roland Jazz Chorus. With that being said, it could well be a chorus as well.

Sounds like a phase shifter.

The Thunderchiefs

The more I listen, the more I believe it's chorus. In my opinion, it doesn't have the "overtones" of a phase shifter.

I have an old Boss BE-5 in the closet. It has a chorus on it. I'll did that out and see if it comes close to what the sound is.
Any other ideas guys & girls?

I'm hearing what sounds like octave generation PLUS pitch-modulation (vibrato)

HORROR BOXES OF THE DEVIL, I REBUKE THEE!!!

Well I found the old Boss BE-5. I plugged it in and used the Chorus and added a little Delay, and it came pretty close to what I hear in the Big Surf song called Blue Surf.
I would be willing to bet that the band is indeed using a Roland Jazz Chorus amp as SurfandBill suggested.
Thanks for the thoughts and help guys.

Big Surf drummer Chris informed me of your post, so I thought I'd jump in. I used a Hughes and Kettner tube Rotosphere. It's a Leslie simulator with a stereo out. One output went into a silverface reverb unit and Bandmaster. The other output went into a solid state echoplex and "Unique" 60's tube amp (probably an accordian amp) made in Mequon, Wisconsin. Thanks for your interest in our sounds.

Wow it is so cool to get a reply from the source himself!
The sound reminds me of another song that maybe was out in the 70's. I don't remember the song, but the sound, the sound, the unusual sound just stuck.
I heard your song Blue Surf from your web site, and I just couldn't get the sound out of my head again. So I asked for help here, and shzaaaammm, here you are!
Thanks for the info! I like your music. Very Happy
