I picked up their LP "The Surfing Scene" buckfiddy at the thrift store, boy was I surprised when I started listening to it. Is this the norm for The Marketts?, this is my first time listening to them. —"Maybe there aren't any surf bands; there's only surf music?" Tuck |

I can't get into that album or Take to Wheels, but the Out of Limits LP is pretty good. It veers back and forth between cool guitar-led stuff and slushy schmaltz, but the drumming (Hal Blaine?) is pretty great throughout, and the production has a lot of cool Joe Meek knock-off touches. The whole thing kinda feels like a sleepy version of The Ventures in Space. —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

I dig The Marketts! Arguably the biggest selling "studio" surf group based on the million seller "Out of Limits" alone. Their stuff is laid back, fun and often sax driven along the lines of the background music you hear in The Beach Party movies. No surprise since it was likely the same session guys on that stuff as well... Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco, Ray Pohlman, etc. The band are a product of producer and A&R man Joe Saraceno. Saraceno was one of the men responsible for re-naming The Pendletones The Beach Boys when he was an A&R man at Candix who released the "Surfin" single in '61. Saraceno also produced albums by The Ventures, The Routers, The T-Bones among others. Ventures in Space features The Marketts tune Out of Limits and both The Marketts and The Ventures have a Batman record. It is believed that there are session guys on some of The Ventures tracks that are likely the same guys that played on The Marketts stuff. Thier LP's... I've never heard that, but I can imagine how bad it must be. The Marketts released three other LP's that I know of but never heard. They are...Sun Power (1967) AM, FM, Etc. (1973) Tryin' to Get That Feeling (1975) Judging by those album titles I can only imagine they're pretty bad as well and not along the lines of their earlier stuff. —BOSS FINK "R.P.M." available now from DOUBLE CROWN RECORDS! |

Their Batman-themed album is pretty cool - I always forget about it, for some reason. That one and Out of Limits I'd recommend for sure. —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

Track 6 "Stingray" on side A of Take to Wheels rules. It's also on the Drag City LP by Jan and Dean but in a different key! The Marketts version is in G and the Jan and Dean version is in E. Love that song!

The Marketts, T-Bones, etc. were all stuio musicians nick-named The Wrecking Crew. They played on <u>hundreds</u> of songs that made the Top 100 in the 60' into the 70's, but are never mentioned in the credits. I had the opportunity to check out a documentary made my Tommy Tedesco's son. It's an incredible doc!! It's played at a ton of film festivals, but was never picked up, so you'll probably never see it in your local movie house. The film makers are trying to raise enough money to cover copyright fees in order to get it released on DVD. Check out the website... be sure to view the trailer and Out Take Theater.... very cool stuff!! |

Is "Out of Limits" considered a Surf music song ?? Since the Marketts are widely considered a Surf band (right?), I figured any "twangy" instro music they did would fall into that category (unlike the Ventures). It certainly sounds more surfy than their version of "Surfer's Stomp". Neither the song or the album are listed in Jon Blair's book. |
