While I'm not a fan of Lady Gaga, her songs do have catchy melodies. I found this video on youtube after I thought that her songs could be surfed up if done right. Just to be clear, I just found the vid. I didn't make it. Maybe those of you who are surf guitar professionals should add a Lady Gaga cover to your set. Might be a way to bring out a cool melody and take out the fluff as well as get a new generation of kids into surf.
Here's the description for the video:
"Surf Rock Cover of Bad Romance. This song needed the surf treatment, it really is an improvement. Recorded in Reaper with Native Instruments Guitar Rig 4 and EZDrummer. Listen to more homemade music at www.butaneprophet.com"

GaGa's Up !!
I think this instrumental takes out all the "good" in this song.
I personally like GaGa, just need a good solo part.

I definitely prefer the "surf version," though pretty dry and distorted, to the original. I guess this proves nothing ruins a good song like bad vocals unless possibly it's bad MTV imagery.

I prefer's GaGa's version. She uses different timbres to dramatic effect, and it is more dynamic. Surf music is 99% incapable of using different timbres.

I admire him for trying. I am a big fan of successful surf covers of modern tunes, and Gaga does have the melodies. A few things this guy could have done- cut about two minutes of fat, and when there is a one note line, try harmonizing it so it doesn't get boring. I'm not going to pick on the tones, obviously it's a home demo. There is possibility with this song.

That is what I was thinking as well, especially towards the end of the GaGa version, there is some interesting harmonizing going on. Pollo's last song at the Tractor? Or do you prefer a different GaGa song?

It's not a bad idea but it's pretty one-dimensional. Vocal melodies are usually a lot more simple than melodies in instrumentals because there are words to fit in. This actually loses some of the melody that is there and the harmony too. While we are on the subject of Lady Gaga, she's become the latest 'vacuous pop-star' that I've heard a lot of 'serious' musicians bad-mouthing - but they are wrong, the woman can really play and she can really sing - a lot better than most of her detractors. Watch the link below of her singing live with just her own piano accompaniment, you can say you don't like it, but you can't say she isn't talented....

Good effort with the song, the video works well too.
Preferable than listening to Long Distance Runaround by Yes i'd say!

A pretty good arrangement and a very nicely done video, IMO.
I'd love to hear a real surf band do this song, but played with a lot more energy and musicianship.
The Ventures made a pretty good living doing instrumental covers of the pop songs of the day. I do agree that the vocal versions were generally better, though.
As good as Gaga's version is, I'm wondering how Pink would have done it with a more "rock" as opposed to "techno/dance club" feel?

I'm calling bullshit on that video. What you hear in that video is not what she is playing in that video, easily seen at 4:13. So what else is fake? No obvious proof but how come the "little guys outside" comment doesn't have the same effects on it as the singing. The breating doesn't match either, more compression when sitting at a piano. That was sung standing, IMO. I'm not saying she can't play, I'm just saying THAT sound and vision don't match. Good editing job though.

Tubedog... I really don't think that is fake. How is it hard to accept that the girl can play a relatively uncomplicated song on piano and sing at the same time? Her hands definitely match up well enough. And the "little guys outside" comment doesn't have the same effect is because they turned off the reverb after the song, as they do on all radio performances. As to it being sung standing, she clearly has deep lungs, and people can project well sitting down, that is why they are professional singers.
Look at this 11-year-old: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqMixeRhGfg
Undeveloped lungs, lacks decades of training on piano....
I can't believe I'm defending Lady GaGa... but she has studied piano for 20 years, and starred in musicals growing up... that should be more than enough to prove she could have played that live. Just because she is a very popular pop star doesn't mean she has very little talent, as is normally the case.

When estreet posted it I was stoked to show my 10 year old daughter the vid as to why she should keep up her piano practice. I watched a couple of times and it seemed fishy. Looking closer, I heard alot of passing tones in the left hand that I wasn't seeing played. The chords are there but there are passing tones missing. Then at 4:13 she clearly moves her hand up more than an octave but I still hear the lowest left hand notes being played, and she was late with it. Also please note how they have that tea cup positioned perfectly so you can't see her left hand most of the time. I'm not saying she is not talented or a more learned musician than me. But I stand by my statement that what you hear is not what is being played at that time. If you would fake that why not the singing and the breathing in some spots seems off but I could be wrong about that. That 11 year old boys version was my first introduction to the song...about a month ago by my daughter. I like his singing way better but prefer the lower register of the eastern european basso if I have to hear a voice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DB4F5Z78lQI&feature=related

I'm pretty sure that's not faked. I'm not a fan of her music, but she is very talented. She writes her own music unlike a lot of other pop stars and her stuff before her fame actually had more of a rock sound. I have no clue how she performs at shows, but to lip sync a piano version of a song with a piano and sync play it seems like way too much work. Probably harder than actually playing and singing it.

Its either fake or she is the best keyboard player ever cause at 4:13 she is getting bass notes without having to push the keys! Any keyboard players have an opinion? I'm just a drummer. Then how bout right before that at 4:10, bass movement and chord movement both ascending, yet her left hand moves lower. I think a lot of string players can relate to a weak pinky finger in the left hand and that is what her problem is. I'm hearing a lot of octaves in the left hand but she isn't playing them. The shot is cropped to leave her pinky out of most of the time and the tea cup is in the way most of the rest of the time. One spot you can see her hands clearly is at :53 and I hear grace notes before the down beat that she does not play in this vid. I know at 1:00 that the sound I'm hearing is not her left hand in this video because it is tacet while I hear a booming bottom note. The left hand is the tell. I hear passing tones in the right at 3:25 that she doesn't play. I got nothing against this women, as a matter of fact my intention was to hold her up as an example for my daughter. I gotta call em as I see em though. It's been doctored.
