Blinking nora Ivan are you always this busy in the summer? Thanks I enjoyed watching these.
Just thinking, there is no doubt you are a strong song writer and your output in terms of quality is consistent.
I wonder, would it be fair to suggest Red Sunrise as the best song you've ever written? because it catches my ear everytime i see a new cossacks youtube, without fail.
Do you remember Oasis forever taking about "a song that will last forever" Well, i guess PJ can smile because he has two (Squad Car and Mr.Moto) but poor 'ol EC has only one (layla) even though his output and fame is massive.
I would start a thread about this but if it got any more than three comments i'd faint! and if it did take off it would probably degenerate into historic tunes that have already made the grade (as songs that last forever).
But what about you young guns? who will make a surf song that will last forever?
Red Sunrise, that will be one i'm sure.

Summers usually tend to be busy - if I plan it right. ;) One advantage of an academic career - I can indulge in my other passions during the downtimes.

Well, you know, I'm very proud of that song. Catherine wrote it but we all contributed to how it sounds in the end. In fact, I have a very clear memory of the first time we played it as a band. It does seem that it's one that many people really connect with - and cover most often. I think its greatest strength is its relative simplicity. Most of the songs I write are not simple, but I think pretty much all classic songs, no matter what genre, are simple and immediate. Nevertheless, I enjoy the challenge of writing songs that are more complex and push the boundaries of surf music a bit. That's just what I'm interested in, and there has been enough love for the songs I've written that I feel pretty secure as a songwriter. I've been very fortunate that I've gotten to play with other musicians who have a great deal of songwriting talent, like Catherine, Mark and Patrick. I would never want to be in a band where I'm the only songwriter, way too much pressure! It's important to have that diversity of approaches, too.
Anyway, thanks for the nice words, crumble! I'm very glad you have such a high opinion of Red Sunrise!

I think Red Sunrise also sealed the deal for me on the Space Cossacks and modern surf music in general, way back when I was just finding my way into this music. I know my heart swelled when I finally got a chance to see the Space Cossacks perform it.
Another song that does it for me is The Defector. I remember writing a really embarrassingly long gushing email to Ivan years ago before I really knew him about that song and how much it meant to me. I was trying to decide if I should change job positions, and that song told me to go for it.
Ivan, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing your thoughts on what you and the other band members thought about the reunion overall? And now that it is over, are the other band members interested in perhaps doing that again a few years down the road?

By the way, as a fan, I can't thank you enough for doing the reunion. Getting into surf music so late, I felt I had missed my chance to see bands like Satan's Pilgrims and The Space Cossacks. And low and behold, I got that chance.
The same can be said for the SG101 conventions. If you would have asked me I'd be in the same room with Eddie Bertrand, Paul Johnson, Bob Spickard, Tom Stanton, Jim Masoner, Tim Fitzpatrick, etc. I'd say you were beyond insane.
How lucky we have been and never say never!

It's very nice to hear that a song I wrote is kind of considered the Cossacks "Stairway to Heaven" LOL! Thanks for the kind words. Plus, believe me, it was as much a THRILL for us to do this reunion as it sounds like it was for the people that got to see us for the first, but hopefully, not the last time:)
