Squier Special P Bass.
Been wanting to get a bass for a while....even more so after I started listening to the Bambi Molesters. Had an Affinity lined up on Craigslist, but it fell through. Found this one at a local shop for what seemed like a pretty good price. Sold some stuff on Craigslist this weekend, so I basically broke even.

oh...now you've done it!
welcome to the world of the Deep End...
a new life-journey with the fine and noble Fender Electric Bass: an excellent choice!
that's a very nice looking Precision bass...do you have some sort of amplification for that 4-stringer yet?
treat her well, and she will take you places you have only until now dreamed of...

Nice! I see "Rob Degraves" approves. Yes, I agree Lada is an inspirational bass player in more ways than one. Enjoy that bass! Drowning your sorrows with a new gear purchase is always a good idea.

No amps yet...can't decide what I want to do. Don't need much more than a practice amp.....but do I plan on only playing it in my living room???? I'm getting the feeling, after only a couple of days playing along with Bambi Molesters songs, that I may want to take this one seriously. Always had an interest in the bass....and I don't want to give up the guitar but I REALLY enjoy driving the rhythm in the couple of songs I've started working on. Thinking about picking up a 25w Orange Crush PiX just for using around here....then finding a bigger amp on craigslist when I get better. Can't wait to work out some songs and crank it up!!!! (the downstairs neighbor on the other hand........she CAN wait!!!! lol)

I will second what our man Moondevil offers: one of the main reasons I took up the bass in the first place was that there were already a dozen guitar players in my school/neighborhood. Whenever there would be a garage session, i never got invited...mainly because there were already 3 or 4 excellent guitar players already there. When i took up bass, the tune changed dramatically...all of a sudden i had way more invites than i could manage. usually there's a scarcity of good dependable bassists. I still play guitar, but it turned out that my main instrument is the bass. The other reason i took up bass was that i found that my ear was drawn to the basslines...it's what i notice first in any tune i hear...even classical music...
i think your idea to find a small portable amp is a great start: have you considered the roland microcube bass amp? it has a lot of cool features and it won't break the bank...

I've always been like that to some extent. I find myself grooving to a bass line as often as a lead.
I've been looking at amps......but drawn to the Orange!!! lol $159 for the 25w. 8" speaker, line in for a trainer/iPod. I could swing that. $100 for a Rumble 15 (new). I could find used for a lot cheaper. Any thoughts on the Peavey TKO 115BW??? Found a couple locally for $150-$200 through CL. (my issue is I don't know how to play so I can test them)

for practice amps, all those models you mentioned should be fine. Peavey makes real sturdy and inexpensive practice gear...usually when it's time to move up to more powerful gear, you can get your investment out of a Peavey.
My very first bass amp was a 5 watt solid state piece of crap with a 6 inch paper speaker...i think it was a super-crappy cardboard-case Silvertone (Tiawan) job from the early 1970s...but, at least it made bass-like sound and it cost $15 from a neighbor's garage sale...
i'm sure you'll find a swell bass amp to get you started...there's a ton of 'em out there...

oh by the way...to test them, all you really need are open strings...
how does the amp handle low open E?
how about A, D and high G?
some amps have more rumble, some more high-end bite...
the open strings will tell you

I was thinking of trying bass several times due to an over-abundance of guitar players. But I think I'd miss my guitar too much.
Good luck with your new endeavor!

The new Acoustic brand bass amps offer a lot of bang for the buck. Check 'em out.

why not do both? Learning a bit of bass can only make you a better musician all around...find a used instrument, and go for it...

I have a Dean Edge 09 bass on hand for my demos and for spontaneous jam sessions. I usually play it through my PA.
I've been told this on more than one occasion: "you play bass like a guitar player"
What exactly does that mean?

Dean: you know, I began thinking about this very same thing...the differences in approach between guitarists and bassists. We should probably start a new thread on this topic, because I think there's a lot to say about it.
I do know this: often when guitar-centric guys write a tune and write a bassline, the bass part often sounds like a rhythm guitar part...or a left-hand of the piano part. I think it has to do with bass players thinking in terms of counter point and rhythm...playing a supporting line that moves on its own. Instead of mirroring the chord changes, many bassists like to play complementary notes and rhythms...
i think this topic could easily support a new thread, and I for one would be interested to read people's thoughts on this...

Do it. I'm curious too. All of my basslines that I've written in my electronic stuff is basically a really low key rhythm, and the few times I hopped on bass and tried to improvise with some buddies, they've also told me I play it too much like a guitar.

Yeah that guitarist playing bass was a bit of an afterthought, but just having a bass handy is good thing.

Pictures really wash out the red in the finish. I'm not a big fan of 'burst guitars, but I like this one. Fender calls it Antique Burst.
Started working on a couple of songs.....and lessons. First one was basically a review as I've had theory in college and have a little experience in guitar. Think I like it here in the deep end!!!!
