Doesn't it kinda spoil it knowing that the Astronauts never played most of those surf instrumentals live, that they didn't write those songs and probably didn't care all that much for them? That it was a purely commercial decision for them? It does spoil it a bit for me. The Atlantics actually ruined their musicial carreer by sticking to their guns and releasing the immensely uncommercial track War of the Worlds as a single in '64. I respect that kind of self-sabotage.

I'd like to see what Eddie and the Showmen, the Fender IV, and Jim Messina and the Jesters were like in their youthful sugar fueled days. I get bored just seeing pure surf music for an entire set though.
So sitting through a whole show of the Ventures or the Shadows during the 60s would probably be my first choice. The Bobby Fuller Four is right in there too.

That is why I've never really became a big Astronauts fan.

Ivan-bear in mind, I'm talking early, pre-Beatles 60's. We were pretty unsophisticated in Charleston, SC. Hell, Folk Music was the BIG thing! All I knew was that when our band learned "Baja", we were Kings of the World.

Doesn't spoil it a bit for me either. They had a great sound and everyone should remember that most (if not all) surf acts played mostly covers or standards. That was typical for the era. Also, they did perform thier surf instrumentals live. There's a Japanese import LP that has them doing so.

I've really gotten into The Astronauts recently, on recommendation from Brian. I've always liked The Lively Ones' take the surf standards. My favorite first wave surf musician is probably still Dick Dale, although I don't actually enjoy playing in that style, with the constant tremolo picking. It's fun to listen to, though.
I still usually prefer to listen to modern surf bands, especially The Bambi Molesters, Slacktone, The Treble Spankers, Bradipos IV, plus pseudo surf bands like Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet and The Hellbenders

Don't get me wrong, I really love the Astronauts and their sound is unquestionably amazing and justifiably a major influence on modern surf music - but on the margin, the above factors I mentioned do push things in favor of the Atlantics for me (who wrote a LOT - all their hits were self-penned, and their second album, from '63, only has one cover track). Or even in favor of Dick Dale, who did write many if not even most of his instros and also obviously had a highly innovative and personal and influential style.

And speaking of "KUK", anyone else ever noticed that both the 1989 Bear Family CD and the 1997 Collectables CD of Surfing With The Astronauts, have the song mixed up with the instrumental "Banzai Pipeline"? I assume because of the lyrics to "KUK": "Banzai Pipeline, shooting the curl, ten toes over, and he's caught in a swirl..."

Not familiar with that one either. I only know of a Japanese gatefold LP containing several surf instrumentals that has the band on stage on the front cover but always assumed it was just a collection of already released studio recordings.

I have the Japanese live cd.
its a regular jewel case, not mini LP sleeve.
will dig it out and post the set list.
but there is only a few instros.
its mostly vocal.

Yes, I noticed that as well. Like you said, I'm sure the term Banzai Pipeline threw off the person who put the track list together.

There are series of cds from Japan that look like mini gatefold lp sleeves.
I thought that's what was being discussed.
its gonna take me awhile to dig out my copy of the reg. jewel case version.

I did some research and guess this is the live album in question:

It appears to have the following 4 surf instrumentals (a bit difficult to read the track list on the back cover): "Surf Party", "Movin", "Pipeline" and "Hot-Doggin". There's also a CD reissue:

I wouldn't be surprised if the case was that the Astronauts did play more instros live when touring Japan compared to when playing in the US.

I do believe you found it, Klas! Good job. This album contains tracks of the Astronauts playing their surf instros live in Japan in '65, plus their vocals too, so vocal haters beware. The live cover shot is the same as the other Japanese LP, but it's a different album.
And their appearance in the movie Surf Party (1964), even though it's "aped", strongly suggests that they played their surf stuff live in America too...
