As a result of the interesting discussion on sustainable surf, and what is and what isn't surf, I rushed our latest tune and got cello and viola recorded this morning. This tune clearly isn't surf, as most anyone would define it. I joked once about "Surf Ambiance", and think this is more of whatever that may be. Anyway, I couldn't get the melody out of my head, and it made me think of the thoughts I have at every summer's end. We call it In the Shade (at Summer's End).

Very cool bill:) I dig emo-surf:)
"Emo-surf" did you make that up? I kinda like that ... It is interesting how "emo" has meant many different things over the past decade in the rock world...everyone eventually had their own definition. It went from cool to despised in just a few years.
It's funny how it is human nature to have the need to categorize things...just the way our brains are wired. In rock, if you don't fit in a category, you're "indie", which of course is its own category. Ultimately, if people like the sound they play it. If not, they don't.

Some modern surf recordings bores me because they often are very monotones. Not your owns, I like your songs. What do you think about my owns? You can listen them on my website www.theinfoiatis.com

Yes, that's nice. I don't think it would be surf music per se, but it would work in a surf album or movie for sure.

Just really great stuff. I like Mezcal Breakfast...maybe because I experienced a few of those in the day. What guitars are you playing on that tune? What fuzz box? Nice production including the back masking at the end.

Thanks SurferBill. I played my vintage Eko Cobra "prototype" on mezcal breackfast. There are 3 built-in effects circuits on the guitar body (see my second screen shot below): a tremolo, a fuzz and a tone/booster. The fuzz on Mezcal Breackfast is the built in effect. Who sold me this guitar told me that during sixties at the Eko headquarter in Italy they produces also Vox guitars which in some models embedded one effects on the guitar body. Since there is no Eko with these 3 built in effects on the Eko vintage catalogs, He told me that it's a prototype. I recorder all the guitars ant the other song tracks (except drums) using a tascam 4 tracks cassette recorder. Then I imported all tracks on my PC and finally we rend a studio for the drums recording. There is a guitar track on reverse tape playing with a bit of echo in the final bridge.

both are good. There are better mechanics on this model than on other Eko Cobra that I have seen (it should be not a base model). Of course it's not like a Gibson SG but with a tuner pedal you can play it live having a good intonation.

Surf is a very specific sort of term, but there's a cloud of related little subgenres around surf that most of us surf fans enjoy, and often get lumped in with surf.
I wish there were a slightly broader term that would encompass these various little genres, but that was more specific than "instrumental rock n' roll" and less specific than "surf."
Great song, by the way!

I like it! Sounds like good soundtrack music. A little bit of a Calexico sound in there too. Must be the cello.

This is a stupid little video we just did for the tune. We liked the concept, but we shot it on a small hand-held video camera, and suffered the resulting shakes. But, we kinda liked it anyway.

I dig it!
You know, if there was any way for surf to become a little more mainstream, it'd be for more bands to make this kind of thing.
Someone could easily put some vocals on top of that.

I liked the video SurferBill. It's kind of creepy and ominous with the song under it. The song itself is beautiful and ghostly. It's surfy enough. If surf guitar is made to be a static musical form, then it'll only be a nostalgic form of music. Nothing wrong with that, but it's nice to see people expanding it a little bit.
I liked your tunes as well tHeInFoIaTiS especially Mezcal Breakfast although I only got up to Springtime before your site started cr*pping out on me!
