Bill, I can't get the argument that they are too twangy for surf. I can't understand that... Especially since the player can make a tele more or less twangy if they know what they are doing.
Unrelated to Bill...
Just look at the passion and feeling in the image below!

Session guys (and gals). Can't blame them. It was a full time job and they had to read charts.

Not to mention standing for 8 hours in a studio is quite the drag.

I had a Tele with a bigsby for a little while. It was a great guitar but I never really liked it for surf.
That's not to say it couldn't sound good in the right hands.
Chris Barfield sure makes his sound great!

Here's a nice cover shot of session ace Billy Strange and his fine collection of guitars. Hmm, no Tele's.
Just a quick comment: I seriously doubt these were all Strange's guitars. This very much looks like something set up by Bob Perine at Fender and Billy just took a shot with all these instruments cause they paid him for it. I wouldn't be surprised if none of these instruments were his.

That makes sense. Personally I can't play nearly as well sitting down, it inhibits my playing - how about every one else?

It's still kinda interesting that they chose to include pretty much the entire Fender line, but no Tele?

Ivan, I'm sure Billy Strange decided which one to hold for the pic though!

Surfer, i think it depends how you practice... i tend to practice sitting in bed.. when i stand up i have a harder time with things that are easy sitting..
I have always been told to practice while standing and that you can always pick out the guitarist that sits while practicing.. hes the guy that has a foot up on a speaker while playing.. so it is more in a sitting type position

I used to be like that when I was in a band. Now all I do is record, and I've adjusted to playing sitting down.

I think any of the main Fender models (Jazz, Jag, Strat, Tele) are viable and you should use what works for you. With particular attention to the Tele, I find that they are a more blank canvas for you to get YOUR sound, combined with the right amp/reverb setup. That being said, have as many guitar/setup options as possible and experiment. Last time I checked (yesterday), that was a lot of fun!!
As an aside, I just got a hold of Mexico Robert Cray Strat (those come only as hardtails) and you get this cool in between Strat/Tele thing that is very broad sounding and very stable. Plus it's surf-approved silver!

Clearly a man of greatly refined taste, as well as an immensely talented guitarist!
(I actually really like his album of spy themes, great stuff!)

I think part of the reason I like the Tele is that it is not a mainstream popular guitar.
Isn't it #2 right after the strat (at least for Fenders alone)?
Yes, the Tele is number 2, but the Strat/Strat copy is a BIG #1
