Permalink Tele with Floating Tremolo

New Topic

For some reason, I really like Teles. There is something about the body shape and how the guitar plays that I'm just drawn to. I used to have one in surf green with a white pickguard and maple fingerboard, but I had temporary insanity and sold it.

Since I keep thinking about that guitar, I'm probably going to sell some gear and buy another one.

The question I have is should I mod it to include a Mastery bridge and Floating Tremolo? (not interested in a Bigsby)

I've seen Teles with that mod here somewhere. What do you think?

It shouldn't be too tough if you've got access to a router.

Personally I prefer Bigsbys to the JM/Jag vibrato.

Bigsbys do look good on a Tele.

I have shied away from them because there seem to be various issues and complexities.

Do you think that the main issues would go away with the Mastery bridge in combination with a Bigsby?

Paul

i think bigsbys are far better designed, tho i love both style trems... ive had no problems ever with the two bigsbys ive got (b5 and b60), and they do look awesome on teles.

for something a bit different a floating trem might be cool, snot sure how much it would change the feel/sound of a tele tho?

I love Tele's too - I have a 'bitsa' made from late 50's and mid 60's parts which I'm not keen to cut into but would consider modding a newer one. PM Stormtiger for a bit of info on Tele's with floating bridges.

The only issue with Bigsbys is they're a little harder to change strings on. Otherwise, I think they're much more hassle-free than the Jag/JM floating trem.

What issues are you referring to?

I have never owned a guitar with a Bigsby. So I'm just going off of what I've read, nothing hands on.

Aside from the more involved process of changing strings, there is a viewpoint that there are tuning problems with them.

There is another school of thought that says there are no unusual tuning issues if the nut, bridge, and setup are right.

The reason that I am considering the floating tremolo on a Tele is that the Mastery bridge really made my Jazzmaster stable compared to its previous state.

The Mastery site also shows the bridge with a Bigsby installation on a Tele, so that's another option.

Yeah, the tuning problem thing is usually reported by people who just slapped on a Bigsby and didn't set up their guitar. Often the problem is binding at the nut. Also, some people with the rocking Jazzmaster bridge don't know to center it, and have tuning problems because of that.

Of the two vibratos I have, Bigsby and JM, the Bigsby is more stable - but that's because the tuners are nicer. Most vibratos are actually pretty stable, it's the miscellaneous other parts or poor setup that cause instability.

I can play for a couple of hours on my Tele, using the Bigsby often, and I don't need to retune. It will detune a little over night, just like any other guitar.

I've never tried a mastery bridge, so I can't comment on that. I've used Mustang, Jazzmaster, 3 brass saddle and Bigbsy Bowtie bridges on this thing. My favorite is the bowtie, but all worked pretty well. The ashtray/3 brass saddle bridge was the least stable, though, because it doesn't rock.

tuning problems will only be accentuated by a trem, if your nut and bridge are set up properly, and the strings are properly wound on the tuning pegs (no more than 2 winds) you can go to town on the trem with virtually no tuning problems.

i find i put my guitars out of tune by strumming too hard rather than frivolous divebombing on the bigsby.

I love bigsby way more than any other trem... every strat trem i have had will not stay in tune at all.. BUT i am sure thats my setup..

And thanks BB.. never thought bout the wraps on the pegs making a difference.. BUT it would jut give the strings more chance to mess up.. i just restrung my SG and was watching tv/not paying attentiona nd ended up with like 10 winds on the pegs... took 2 weeks for the G to stop going outa tune:)

I wanna play just like him when i grow up...

Thanks for the insight guys. It's very helpful.

Uma, I just saw your Tele from the GFS Surf 90 pickups thread. What a beautiful guitar. The sound clips are great too.
