Permalink JBL D-130 copies / equivalents

Hi there

JBLs are rare this side of the pond in sunny London, but it seems recently a lot of companies have been producing approximates to it.

I'm aware of the Weber California; does anyone know anything about the Eminence that's in the Fender Twin Custom 15"? Anyone know where I could get one?

There is also the Eminence Commonwealth, which is very expensive and very heavy duty. Looks more like an EV.

Any others?

Thanks,

Abdul

(By the way, I also posted this question on The Gear Page forum in case you're one of those strange people who gets offended if you ask the same question to two different groups of people. )

I had the Twin Custom 15 for 2 years and never really liked it. I assumed it was the speaker, but alas, I got another Twin (a '71 that was meticulously blackfaced), and tried the speaker out through it. It sounded absolutely great. So, I think the speaker itself is very good, while the new Twin Reverbs are, to my mind, suspect.

I don't think it will sound nearly as good as a JBL D130 from the 60s, tho.

You can find a near copy of the Eminence "Special Design" speaker at USSpeaker.com. It's called the Eminence Legend 151, and I think it is the same as the Fender speaker, but with a higher impedence and a few tweaks, like a cloth instead of an aluminum dust cap.

That said, I would probably go with one of Weber's speakers, they are great and I love them. The Cali 15 AlNiCo would be your best bet for a JBL equivalent sound.

thanks mate, that's useful. I'm thinking of running a 2x10 and 1x15 side by side.

I must respectfully disagree with WindanseaBeachBoy about the Fender 65 Reissue Twin Reverb Custom 15 being suspect. However, I agree that the speaker is fantastic.
