I have a bunch of Severson's SURFER mags from the early to mid-sixties and thought some of you may dig seeing some of the old ads and articles. I will post more periodically.
My first entry is a Fender ad from Sept 1964. Interesting to note that Fender wants you to know that they make "music to surf by" considering the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan on Feb 9, 1964. Hmm, maybe surf music hung in there longer than we thought??? Awesome.

cool, thanks Norm.
Maybe they are referring to the instro and Vocal surf sounds.
The Beach Boys were sponsored by fender weren't they?

I believe so. The BB early setup was blond Bandmasters with matching tanks and thier guitars were Jazzmaster and Strat. DD of course had a Fender endorsement too.

Cool - keep 'em coming. How long did Fender advertise in Surfer?
(And what's happened to Surfer?! Seems to be a pale imitation of what it used to be...)

Bitchin' Norm, I've never seen these before. Is anyone else kind of cringing over those guitars stuck in the wet beach sand?

How long did Fender advertise in Surfer? I'm interested in knowing the answer to that myself. My guess is probably during the heyday of surf music, '62 to '64. Two short years, bummer. But it would be interesting to see if they kept going on after that, as suggested in my first post.
What's up with Surfer mag today, you ask? They feature the cutting edge stuff from today, 'natch... guys like Laird Hamilton and Kelly Slater and tow-in big wave riding, etc I can't blame them for changing with the times, but I'm into finding out more about the longboard riders from years past.

I was kinda wondering what became of the girl too, personally.
The guitars in the sand don't bother me much. Looks like goodtimes to me!
Glad you guys are diggin' this... more to come!

I had a look through a copy a week or so ago and it seems to be observing surfing rather than being a part of it. Can't find a copy to buy here - none of the surf shops or newsagents stock it anymore. It disappeared about the same time as the credit crunch. I've got a collection from the mid-80's to about 2000. No Fender adverts in any of those!
The Severson years were classics though. Full marks for getting Fender ads!
Speaking of old riders, one of my favourites was/is Phil Edwards: "The beach? Man, the beach is just something I cross to get to the surf.."
Just wondering: Are there any other guitar/amp/instrument manufacturers advertising in those issues?

And speaking of the girl - she appears to have spent the evening stood next to a Showman - that right ear is still ringing....

I had heard of the Longboard Journal , but couldn't find anything on the net about it.

the internet and the free newspaper type surf mags have killed what's left of the surfing magazine market. plus there are so many magazines available now. we still sell them in our shop but most guys just want to look through them briefly and that's it. surfer and surfing are now owned by the same company. i used to like them for the travel artlcles but now when i read one i feel like i'm reading 'teen scene magazine'. longboard magazine didn't have enough following to make it profitable from what i've heard. the two best mags available now in my opinion are 'surfers journal' and 'surfers path' (from the UK) which both appeal to a more mature surfer who wants to see more pictures than just someone getting 'air'.

Surfing and Surfer owned by the same company? Oh dear. They used to be such fierce rivals!
Surfer's Path is very good - has a nice balanced view of surfing, IMO. In an effort to stay on topic, I should mention that Surfers Path doesn't have any Fender ads, either. But it does have Jack Johnson ads....

Love the old Fender ads!
Norm, thought you might find this outtake from the photo shoot interesting. According to your magazine date, this took place earlier than the "late-1960s" caption here indicates.
