I stumbled upon an internet radio site called Pandora.com
http://www.pandora.com/#/
What's cool about it is that it creates a radio station based on the kind of music you like. You input a band/artist, and it creates the station. I input Dick Dale and it played DD, Junior Brown (who was playin this guitar/slide guitar combo contraption, The Mono Men, Davie Allan & The Arrows, The Pyramids, etc.... could listen all day.

i like pandora as a alternative to like aolradio, since aol seems to play the same stuff over and over... i just wish you didnt have to pay for pandora after 40 hours or whatever it is:(
BTW... making a johnny cash station will get nice results:)

I'm being a jerk but I do want to point out that Last.fm and Pandora won't go out of their way to bring you something unique; there's really only a certain depth and breadth it will get to and since there's nobody there monitoring what you're hearing they won't work to improve that. So while they've gotten very good at accuracy, they'll never bring you something obscure or out of print, and naturally they'll never give you any hint of personality

After I listened awhile began to wonder about that...although The Mono Men and Dave Allan and the Arrows were kinda new to me (ducking from pillows).

Was listening to pandora on my iphone last night and heard mono-men for the first time also:)
And while a human DJ might help you learn new stuff or hear odd stuff.. its nice to have options that are there 24/7 instead of maybe weekly if lucky

I have been on Pandora quite a while and have a farely thorough Surf station...have found a few new bands of interest (Verbal and Fugazi's instro stuff) but it took some time to get the station tweaked to where I have gotten it.

Attention: Blackberry users.. there is a free downloadable app for Pandora radio as well. I have been using it for about a year now and it works really well. Awesome!!!

Almost everything is new to someone, and Pandora is a decent way to find out about some things. I have run into things there that were new to me, though not Davie Allan. I think they have more music in the surf vein now than they did initially, too.
However, they do offer you a fair amount of horrible stuff over time, too, and their vaunted parametric scheme is missing all kinds of obvious parameters from the instrumental rock point of view, like instrumental. They should have talked to Phil Dirt or someone ...
However, all things considered, I find that I do better just buying CDs and the occasional record, sticking them in the computer, and programming them myself. Of course, that way I still miss the personality thing that someone pointed out.

I used Pandora (iphone) until about a year ago, but then they started to limit the amount of times you could skip a track, and that was it for me. I don't know if they still do that, but just that fact that I had to frequently skip tracks should have been reason enough to remove it anyway... last.fm however has my tastes pretty nailed, doesn't care if I skip tracks, and keeps records of my listening habits. (Good if I'm driving and have no business looking at a track's title.)

Pandora played a nice surf medley by Junior Brown, and showed this guitar-slide-thing...

Morph: They limit it to 6 skips per stations. I have found a couple loopholes though.. first, if you close the Pandora app and go back in it resets the count of skips OR you can make multiple stations of different similar artists, or their actual songs as station names. This will bring up more of the same/similar bands and you can skip to your hearts content.

Love Pandora, especially on the Droid. I have recently discovered grooveshark.com, though. Not so much surf, but pretty nice!

It has been recently suggested to me that Pandora needs more surf music on it's playlists. I was told that each band has to personally upload their own music to the website. Seeing how it's free, it can't hurt and it may get you some new fans. Here's what they want and a link to more info.
_
The Basics: How to Submit
To submit music to Pandora, you'll need these items:
1) a CD of your music
2) a unique UPC code for that CD*
3) this CD to be available through Amazon as a physical CD (and not just as MP3s)**
4) the legal rights to your music
5) a standard free Pandora account, based on a valid email address, that will be associated with this submission
6) MP3 files for two of the songs from your CD
Once you have all of these items ready to go, you can submit your music to Pandora for consideration here: http://submitmusic.pandora.com/.

The big problem is actually having the pandora folks process the submissions. One of my former bands with a modicum of success submitted tunes two years ago, and we're still not in there!

Did you follow up with them Gary? Maybe they made a mistake or you didn't fill out something correctly?

No, and you're correct that it could've been any number of things. The leader of the group submitted everything. So, in their defense, other than being told everything had been submitted and confirmation received, I don't know what else may or may not have occured!
