I'm pretty sure any Man Or Astro-Man? fan dug the hell out of them.

Not this one, hoss.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Yes, they were they a real girl band, although it is still dicussed.
Really good album, anyway.

I brought up the Astronettes (again) a while back, and the general consensus still seems that this is a bootleg. Did you actually see them play?

Southern Culture On The Skids (Mary Huff on Bass)

For years I thought I was being followed by scots and another band called zen frisbee. The reality was I was going places that didn't charge admission. I didn't think scots was a surf band though. It was more like NPR approved country.

I signed this.

The Tiki Tiki Bambooz have had at least two female bassists. Doro was playing with them when they toured the US about 4 years back, and when she moved to New York, they replaced her with some cute amazon whose name I never found out.

AFAIK the Tiki Tiki Bamboo's bass player's name is Noriko.

This ain't no bootleg.
The Astronettes were kinda 90's fake band settled in Paris.
The girls were musicians' girlfriends managed by their boys who actually played in famous 90's Punk bands (Métal Urbain / Strychnine)
This side project was a real (-studio-) tribute to the Astronauts, but the girls did play most of the part, except some drums and a few guitars. If you listen closely to both bands, you will notice too many differences : The Astronettes have a "vintaged" sound and all the songs are far different from the Astronauts themes.
I didn't have the chance to see them live myself, but I can remember press articles and some TV program (that was called "Les enfants du Rock") at that time ,fueling this topless first part band...

WOW! Thanks for the info Number9! What a strange project this may have been. It's probably why many are quick to dismiss something like this... it seems almost bonkers to have half-nude women playing an entire first-wave surf album, doubly-so in the US. But I guess since there is not a lot of evidence (well, so far NO evidence other than the CD cover), this debate will probably continue. If anyone actually has footage, this would be beyond awesome.

Well, another good thread has been degraded. My work here is done.

For what it's worth I spent Saturday night photographing two half nude male bands - punk, so otherwise irrelevant here, one topless, the other semi-bottomless - a counter statement to the first, I believe. This - my doing it, anyway - was largely involuntary. I was taking some pictures for friends and the undress seemed to come with it. It is interesting to speculate on why a male band can do this and just be having a fun night - these days anyway - while a female band would be making a career move that they would probably come to regret. Unfortunately, it doesn't lead to any really novel thoughts. I hope women who want to play surf music will not give up on it in spite of this thread.

The Dwarves and G.G. Allin are two punk bands that routinely did or have been doing this for years. I also hear of other (male) groups randomly doing this going back to the Doors that have never had any real publicity damage from it; there is definitely a double standard though. Just to be clear, I don't find this a necessary PR stunt in any genre... in the Astronettes case, it was just interesting because of all the speculation about them being real or not (the music just sounded too dead-on to be real).

C'mon guys leave the 90's and the nude punkers and get back to girls,

Naomi and Ruiko from The WHYs. I miss the girls, they had a great time in the US. I am pretty sure they have broken up, their web site is gone and the MySpace page hasn't been updated in ages. At 4'11", Ruiko is a real hellraiser!

I'm just being a jerk, don't mind me.

That's too bad about the Whys breaking up. I remember following their tour (from afar), it sounded like a lot of fun.
