Both Awesome!!! I haven't heard Kraftwerk for a long time, that was from The Man Machine I believe.

I bet a lot of their stuff translates well into surf.

Thanks for the great links.

+1, Pappa_Surf ... I think you're onto something there

I don't think it translated well into surf. The Messer Chups cover was pretty decent, but what hurts it is the timbre of the guitar is too similar to play both the vocal part and the synth parts. And, clearly, the same guitarist on both of those versions is playing both the lead vocal and the synth that follows the vocal line. Yet the Kraftwerk version has that under the vocal line. The first version does a very poor job of this, but the Messer Chups do a much better job since they use the muted reverb guitar for the passing synth. And finally, neither version captured the affects the Kraftwerk singer puts into his voice during certain lines.

You know, I agree with you to some extant on this comment. Kraftwerk's vocalist on "The Model" has a real "counterpoint" effect in the tune; a counterpoint to the rigid synth-based rhythm structure...he changes the emphasis on the melody notes and plays around with the rhythm a bit. I think his line could be captured effectively with a surf guitar line...the timing and emphasis and punctuation of the vocal line is super important to the tune...

I did like how the Messer Chups version added some extra guitar improv stuff to the overall sound...the way the punctuated the melody line with chords etc...

check out what the instrumentalists do on this one:

a surf combo could approach this level, I believe, if they listen to the vocals and treat the vocal line as if it were an instrument line...

this tune lends itself exceedingly well to the surf beat approach!

Tremolo Beer Gut still has the best version IMHO

Obviously Oleg Gitarkin himself was not satisfied with his early version of Das Model. The Messer Chups rerecorded it for their new release "zombie shopping". But even this new version is in my opinion no match for the Treble Spankers treatment of the tune on "Araban". Up to now this is my absolute favorite (though I have to admit I don't know the Tremolo Beer Guts one).
