Permalink Jazzmaster wiring: what does that switch really DO?

New Topic

Forgive me if I missed this topic on a previous thread.

My question today is: what does that upper black slider switch actually DO? I know it's a sort of rhythm or bass preset sort of bypass switch. I know what it sounds like and I know it involves those thumb-wheel controls...

but electronically/ engineering wise: what does it actually do?
which pickup (s) are involved in that circuit?
what was the reasoning behind the circuits design and implementation?

has anyone here found a use for that circuit?

thanks for any responses you choose to share

dp, you've never seen this?

It explains it all very well, with sound samples.

It activates the "rhythm circuit", where it runs just the neck pickup through the volume and tone wheels on the upper bout. In the down position, then the lead circuit is active, and you control that with the controls and switches on the lower bout.

As for some of the "whys", Forrest White had an idea for being able switch between lead and rhythm with the flick of a switch. He noticed lots of guitarists having to fiddle with controls when playing lead and then returning to rhythm when playing with an orchestra. He built a guitar that had this option in 1941 or 1942. Much later, when he worked for Fender, he gave the idea to Leo Fender, who put it on the Jazzmaster. There are some details about this in the book "Fender: The Inside Story".

wow! thanks for reminding me of that awesome site...I learned how to properly set up my Jazzmaster trem over there a few years back, i guess i forgot how vast the knowledgebase was at webrocker's "Higher Evolution of the Offset Guitar" site.
