Would Chiyo Ishi of Chiyo & the Crescents count for present purposes? I guess their stuff sort of marginally garage rather than surf. They are listed in John Blair's discography. Definitely lead guitar. Another marginal, but current case would be Sherrilynn Nelson (keys) of the Velveteen Loveseat. In the first place Emilien03 said guitar (although others have ignored this restriction, too), and in the second place VLS claim to be a garage band. However, they think of their instrumental material as surf music and I tend to agree. Their guitarist Chris Houghton told me once who wrote which of their instrumentals, but I forget. We're a little short of surf bands here in the altiplano norteamericano, so perhaps we may be a little inclusive for tastes elsewhere. There was a woman playing keyboards with Susan & the Surftones for a while, too. Back when they were in Buffalo. Between the Neptunas and the Trashwomen I would take the Trashwomen every time, from what little I've heard. Partly it's "quality" but partly the Neptunas seem a little arch or camp about the whole thing. (For example, the drummer in the recent posts (Toastita?) looks like she is deliberately using sticks too big for her.) Maybe I just haven't seen the Trashwomen's promotional material as much. The Neptunas were definitely fun, however, and I prefer my music fun if it's at all possible. I'd go see them if they were playing now and I was near by. I think it's a little sad that there aren't more women playing surf music. Or rock & roll in general. I remember an interview with Susan Yasinski suggesting that she'd had at least some experience with prejudice against what she was doing, starting at a very early age. I think there is a definite tendency to be more frank or at least more dismissive in evaluations of the quality of female players. The fact is, most people never get as far as being fun to watch or listen to, and few of these have the determination to be really good, especially when faced with the discouragements inherent in playing surf music at all. If people are singling you out for special critical attention on top of that, I imagine it's pretty tough. And, it may be just a little annoying when people start listing you and counting you, too. "Oh, look, another one! And cute, too." I don't think anyone has mentioned Carol Kaye yet, for the early studio side. Names Glasgow Tiki Shakers: Joyce Seko The Surftones farfisa player was "Kim13." |

Since this thread is in danger of degenerating into Thee Great Trashwomen/Neptunas Rumble, let's just leave it at this. Two fun bands ... one of whom always had a drummer who didn't treat time like it was some nebulous concept. —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

The Tiki Tiki Bambooz have had at least two female bassists. Doro was playing with them when they toured the US about 4 years back, and when she moved to New York, they replaced her with some cute amazon whose name I never found out. ~B~ |

Well I'm gonna go on record, and say neither band The Trashwomen, nor The Neptunas were very impressive to my ears. This has nothing to do with them being all female surf/garage musicians either.I just found their music very sloppy, and unworthy of a second listen. Reverb, It's A Way Of Life! |

Well there's the little girl Chichi from Japan, if she sticks with it imagine what she might sound like ten years from now. Taimane rips on a ukulele, I'm sure she could front a surf band quite well. |

They wrote a bunch of boring songs and then they broke up. The end. —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

That band never would have gotten any attention - let alone a record deal - if they hadn't had an ex-White Zombie member in their ranks. They were dull, dull, dull. Jake's still here, BTW. —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |
