The DJ Mightly Manfred from the Little Steven's Under ground garage channel on Sirius, aka Manfred Jones of the Woggles, asked me if I could recommend "a surf band with a vocal and a new record (2010)". Little Steven wants to feature their music on his own radio show. So can anybody here recommend a Beach Boys / Jan & Dean / etc. style band with a new CD out? |

I think The Volcanics are supposed to have a new album out fairly soon ... maybe? —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

Yeah, those were the ones that popped up in my head too. I couldn't help thinking of my old band The Daytonas as well. To be considered a vocal surf band, I think the repertoire should consist of at least 50% vocals. — |

Very cool Klas. I really enjoyed that video. I don't own any Daytonas stuff. Any old stock lying around? I'd gladly buy something off ya!!! I agree with what you say about a band having to do at least half vocals to truly be a vocal surf band. That's why I could only think of the two bands I mentioned. Many surf bands do a vocal here and there but there's a difference between doing a surf vocal and garage or frat type vocal: A surf vocal takes real singing ability. Thanks Norm, I'm glad you liked it. All four of our albums are long time out of print and I now only have personal copies left. I did a Google search and it appears as two of the albums are now on iTunes if you're into such thing. I'm not totally happy with everything we did back then but below is a selection of short preview clips of some of our vocals that I actually find to be pretty good. image image |

I think most of the better vocals people are doing now days (over the last 15-20 years) are in the garage line, not the vocal combo line. It seems to me that was true back in the day, too. The Beach Boys and some of their associates and imitators are a rather special case. I think the rarity of the approach and the difficulty of doing it well go a long way toward explaining the aversion of the second wave and since to doing vocals or admitting that surf bands can do anything but instrumentals. I can think of a few decent jobs in the Beach Boy line, and the early Boss Martians would be one of them, but most of that sort of thing is slightly tongue in cheek (as with the Boss Martians) and a lot of it is weak to dreadful, too (not the Boss Martians). It seems to me that real surf band vocals sound more like the Kingsmen (or at least the Crossfires) than the Beach Boys. |

Tuck, I pretty much agree with your summation. Kingsmen/frat or garage-y vocals are definetly easier to pull off, that's why most surf bands do them (including my band). May be an easy target for disagreement, and probably not "under ground" in the terms of the sat.radio show... but an album I've enjoyed this year from some Florida kids - Surfer Blood, album Astro Coast. Pretty solid record start to finish. Plenty of surf influence clearly present. I was also going to mention THE SURFIN' LUNGS by far the best surf music group on the scene, well in the UK anyway. Been going strong now for nearly 30 years and their new album FULL PETAL JACKET is truly excellent. Also, for anyone interested, their last album SURF, DRAGS & ROCK 'N' ROLL is superb especially seminal surf music classic PSYCHO SURFER! I recommend this group above all other current ones. Fajitas! |

You cannot put the Lungs on the same genre of the Beach Boys or the "classic" vocal beach/surf bands. The Surfin' Lungs have more of a surf punk band than a typical surf band. They are great and fun, I love them and I have all their albums, but their attitude on stage is very aggressive for surf. Lorenzo "Surfer Joe" Valdambrini |
