The Chantays All three were super-good when they didn't attempt to sing vocal tunes... |

This would have turned out totally different if it was favorite vocal surf bands. I know DD wouldn't have made that list of mine. Aw hell, why not. Beach Boys and Jan & Dean are givens, so:
That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

Mine have all been mentioned, but I'd thrown in some more local acts (other than The Atlantics) such as The Denvermen and The Dave Bridge Trio - and whilst The Delltones aren't surf instrumental or strictly surf, they did record some surf tunes, came from Sydney surf beach areas and have been going since about 1958 |

My top five faves, in no particular order: The Atlantics I'd include The Ventures as my #1 influence while learning guitar, but they aren't a surf band. I imagine Davie Allan's group wasn't either, but their version of Apache '65 ROCKED...still have the 45. —Jack Booth The Mariners (1964-68, 1996-2005), 2025 |

It's too hard to limit myself to one band! The first-wave surf bands whose albums I listen to all the way through without skipping songs include: Richie Allen and the Pacific Surfers Link Wray and The Raymen and The Shadows are my favorite non-surf instro bands that I listen to a lot without skipping songs. |

Picking one is just not possible for me. When the Astronauts did instro and hot rod stuff I love em, but some of the stuff they did is blah. I love tons of Gary Ushers various projects. Buckets Seats and Barons of LA by Jan and Dean rock. The Chantays on Pipeline really got it right. I love everything the Pyramids did. I feel the same way about most of Dick Dale's stuff. I also really still like the Sandals even after all these years. When Yuzo does Black Sand Beach or LA it is perfection. I love drag stuff so I can't ignore the Beach Boys or the Rip Chords either. — |

Belairs and Trashmen. Most of my surf stuff is compilations, so I don't get a chance to check out the depth of most band's work. —"We're lousy, we can't play. If you wait until you can play, you'll be too old to get up there. We stink, really. But it's great," Johnny Ramone . |

Not a Surf band but they're probably my favorite instro band without a doubt... As for Surf bands I would have to say The Fender IV, Jim Messina and his Jesters, The Astronauts(Instro stuff only), The Avenger VI, and other miscellaneous groups who I've only heard 1 or 2 songs from. You can't just pick one, impossible! — |

Without a shadow of doubt, THE TRUANTS Their one & only single is a masterpiece of the genre. The whole chording bit in the middle is pure proto-punk!!!! Recorded in just a few hours...................... Recording music is just TOO overcomplicated now. |

Sophisticated choice Ivan... I think the Atlantics are like Shadows and Ventures at the very limit of surf music for my taste, but "Turista" is one of my favorite songs! Damn I have lost that CD!!!!!!! My favorite band are the Astronauts. —Lorenzo "Surfer Joe" Valdambrini |

Recording difficulty is probably just the same or easier than it was back in the 60s. Quality expectations and artistic expectations have risen, for the better, which adds extra time in the studio. Also, people now write and flesh out the songs in the studio. |
