Are the Shadows a surf band?

It's funny that in so many threads this question is raised, or someone says so and so isn't a surf band. The Shadows aren't technically a surf band but just like The Ventures I don't see a problem with them being put in that category personally.

Favorite Surf Band from the 60's? Way too many to pick just one so I'll pick my top three... Lively Ones, New Dimensions, Surfaris. A special mention should go to The Fender IV and Dick Dale of course.

Quite hard to decide ... today my fabulous three is: The Astronauts, The Trashmen & Link Wray
(is Link Wray technically a surf musician ?? I'm not sure but I love this man !!)

Can I post my fav 5?

1- Trashmen
2- Fender IV
3- Eddie & the Showmen
4- Lively Ones
5- New Dimensions

I don't consider that the Shadows, Ventures, the fab Wailers (from Tacoma), Link Wray, the Fireballs, the Champs, Duane Eddy (and this list could go on and on) as surf music. However their contribution to the style is obvious.

At the moment, it'd be a coin-toss between the Sentinals and the Astronauts.

...subject to change as I listen more to complete bodies of work (I'm still a bit of gremmie/grommet in the depths of the genre)

REAL Surfbands will be "Dick Dale & His Del Tones",
but it were "The Shadows" that made me play the electric guitar and Link Wray (and Dick Dale) who made me exploring instrumental Rock'n Roll in detail ;). All in all it was Robert Rodriguez' "Roadracers" which lead me to Link & Co.

What is really funny is,
If you ask Dick Dale what he plays, he says its not surf, but Dick Dale music.

  1. Dick Dale & His Del-Tones
  2. Fender IV
  3. Jim Messina & His Jesters
  4. The Crossfires
  5. The Atlantics

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

The Beach Boys!

Seriously, I'd never be able to pick just one. It's a tie between The Lively Ones, Dick Dale and the Deltones, Jim Messina and the Jesters, Eddie and the Showmen, The Trashmen, The Sentinals, The Fender IV, The Avengers VI, The New Dimensions, The Surfaris, The Original Surfaris, The Belairs, The Challengers, The Atlantics, The Centurions, The Tornadoes, The Astronauts etc etc...

Astronauts and Belairs. I actually learned most songs back then from Ventures records. The only true "Surf" records I had back then were The Astronauts and Surfaris (I learned their version of Miserlou and still play it that way today).

Dave Myers and the Surftones.

I'm gonna cheat a bit myself on this one - I'll take the instro half of the Astronauts, and the instro half of the Trashmen - add 'em together, and you get one band! Sort of....

Aloha Screwdriver - Lunar Wobble CD
The Nebulas - Euphorion LP / CD
Supertubos - The Fourth Drive CD
Continental Magazine - Issue #38 w/17 Song CD

there are a few that I really like,
but even though it is a small amount of songs,
5 instros,
and 1 vocal,
the Fender IV rule.
