Hello, I am looking for a highly qualified surf guitar instructor located in San Diego.
Here's what I've got:
- AVRI Jaguar set up w/Pyramid flat wounds
- AVRI Jazzmaster still stock from the factory
- Yamaha TVL semi-hollow w/p90's
- '68 Bandmaster head into an Avatar 2 X 12 cab w/vintage 30's
- G-Spring outboard reverb unit
- Fuzzes: Fuzzbrite, Guyatone TZ-2, Danelectro Cool Cat, Big Muff Pi
- Misc collection of other noisy effects
- A practice spot in Point Loma w/ a killer view and very liberal limits on noise.
- Cash money
- Beer
- An astounding lack of talent
Here's what I am looking for:
-
Surf guitar lessons, traditional standards along with a walk on the wild and hairy side such as Davie Allan, man or astroman?, Amino Acids, Thee Cormans, Zombie Surf Camp, along with a bit of "garage" rock like the Sonics, The Wailers, The Cramps, The Mummies, Billy Childish etc. - hence the fuzz and distortion pedals.
-
Help dialing in the sound on my gear
-
Feed and caring of the Jaguar and Jazzmaster; how to set up and maintain.
-
Teach me how to use a metronome
-
Lessons every other week (or so) that include fairly detailed homework with a structured practice regime. That last part is very important. Structure.
All of this is to work towards being "band ready" with some other cats that have the same leanings. I can read tab, but have problems with timing (rhythm) and need help with tremolo picking.
I know a fair amount(?) of major and minor chords, open and barre. Easy going and eager to learn, with a good memory. Old as dirt, but can still out surf most guys half my age. I don't know why I threw that last one it there, but it sounds pretty good to me
Please PM me with your info if interested or post to this thread if you have any suggestions.

If I lived in the area I'd be glad to show you what NOT to do.
You could keep the money. I'd do it for the beer, the opportunity to jam on fine gear and to hang out in Pt. Loma.
So much for structure:)

Dirtbag,
I live in Pt. Loma and play in a backyard surf band called "The LomaKings".
Me and some of the old boys might meet up tomorrow at Spotless (across from Winstons) to bash out some old punk rock and surf songs. You are more than welcome to bring a six pack and guitar and jump in.
PM me your email address and I will get a hold of you.

I use a 1973 Strat through a 1970 Fender Twin Reverb with a Russian Big Muff (green) for The Amino Acids tone

I find this thread really funny and I totally respect this guy. He purchased some really expensive gear, even tripped it out with incredibly expensive strings, and then finally admitted he needs lessons. More power to him! Most people just throw money at gear hoping they'll get better. Joe Bonamassa fans(and me!), I'm looking at you.
