Bass players.. what kind of amp are you using for your live performances? I'm playing with a couple guys that use vintage fenders, so they are very loud. Have been bass amp shopping for a while.. but I cant decide. Thanks!

I use an Ampeg B-100R. I changed the speaker and put a JBL E140 (reconed in 4 ohms) because the original speaker laked of attack at high volume. I play a Musicmaster Vista Series most of the time and I use a pic. Try the small Ampeg SV head with a 15" speaker or whaterver you like. Its a 200 watts amp with two outputs and its good looking. |

The B-100R is just enough but if you want a bit more and open options I recomended you to buy a SV head and try diferents cabinets and speakers. My B100r with the knew speaker is ok. It have to fight agains a Twin Reverb and Showman/Band Master. For small places its great, and its a good monitor when you use a PA system. For me the B-100R is perfect because its small and it fit into my car. A SV head and a small cabinet should be ok too. About volume it depends in your style, your bass and how loud guitars are played. Last edited: May 03, 2010 17:22:23 |

For performance, the bass players I play with use "modern" high-power solid-state heads and ported, multiple-speaker set ups with crossovers. |

I normally play through a 450 watt solid state ampeg head (tube preamp) and a ported 4x10 cab. I am looking for something small, light and portable for our upcoming tour though. I need to be able to fly or ship it. I'm checking out Mark Bass cabs and their digital heads or the new digital SWR head. they're like 3 1/2 pounds and a jillion watts. —The Exotics 1994-Current |

I second the 800RB - it's a little slice of heaven. I play mine through either an SWR 4x10 or an Ampeg 8x10, and it's got plenty of juice to power either of them. ~B~ |

+1 for the GK 800 RB. Tube amps for bass sound a bit farty to me. Yes, even the venerated SVT. The GK has plenty of SOLID deep bass, and will growl if you want it to, just fiddle with the knobs. Eric |

My best bass sound yet was achieved with a Rickenbacker 4001 using the stereo output jack. The neck pickup was sent straight to the GK 800RB w/ a Hartke bottom. The bridge pickup was routed through an MXR Flanger into to a Twin Reverb. Deep, swirly, three dimensional bliss! Eric |

Our bass player uses an Orange Tiny Terror head (500W). Valve preamp with solid state power amp. Switcable 4 or 8 ohm. More than enough to match my 40W valve Fender! He uses it with a 4x10" cab with neodynium (?) speakers or something. It starts going over my head at this point. Cab is very light though. Like the idea of the stereo Ric bass! — |

Our bass player plays through this Eden head. It might be the best sounding bass amp I've heard. That thing'll certainly move some air.... —

Our bass player uses a Fender Bassman 400 w/ 4 x 10 matching cab. It's just OK, in my opinion. He also has a little Mark Bass amp 300/500 combo with 1 x 15 just for home use. That's a great sounding amp and very lightweight. I think it sounds better than the bassman. — |

I agree! I have an Eden Navigator that I've had for years and it's my fave. Not for the surf purist but a geat sound. |

I've definitely been a fan of Eden heads all along, but I find for my kind of playing they're almost too clean and smooth, I like a little bit of grit to my tone, which is why the boost control on the 800RB swayed me. Still, Edens are sexay. ~B~ |

I originally played bass through a Fender Bassman 50 back in the olden days: that is until I found out it's a way better guitar amp! In the past, I have played Sunn and Ampeg...but settled down with the Gallien-Krueger... I do love the all-tube Mesa Bass 400+...but it's too much $$$ for me right now... Lots of people use the Fender Showman for bass, and it sounds excellent. |

Just surfing by to throw in my 2-bits.... The Ampeg B-15 (from 64 & 66) is the most recorded bass amp of all time! I used to listen to them regularly when I worked @ a high end studio in NYC! Best bass sound I've heard hands down with just the right amount of gain. I always thought that every club & studio should own one. Can't speak for the reissues but I think they have just the head reissued as well. And it's Tube goodness! Warning: Weighs a ton.... Trust me...I know |
