Just thought I would see what the masses think about their rigs ? Blackface with the scooped midrange great for lot's of styles of guitar. Or your Brownface with more midrange and presence Oyeah, and killer Tremolo! Both types of amp are the world most emulated and are suitable for all style of guitar.. Whats your pick and show of your hardware ?

I can't imagine why anybody would choose blackface over brown other than $$$.
I'm going to tell everyone a guitar secret. Online, most times anybody says that a certain piece of gear is the best, that means it is what they own and that they haven't tried out other gear in a suitable environment. And they are likely hobbyists.

I like both black and brown. They sound a little different. I think brown is better for surf. Black maybe for other stuff. It is damned close, though.

Ok, nothin wrong with being a Hobbyist.. I Love blackface amps.. However, on the otherside I play Brownface.. See it's all good bro.. It's really in the way you play, the amp is just going to color it.. It's Brownface for all of my surf stuff but the blackface stuff I think colors it by taking out the midrange.. Good for Rock and blues / country...

You buggers!! Ive recently bought a Princeton reissue, its my only amp and my latest craze is Surf! I do other stuff with it so i dont really mind. I only learnt about the midrange scooped thing from this site. Does that mean i can just add a bit of mid with my eq pedal and bobs your uncle or is it a bit more complicated than that? I fear the later is likely to be true. I dont comment on what i think is best as im one of those hobbyists who hasent tried a brown faced fender, in fact i never even saw one on my quest for my new amp.

Go to your local vintage guitar shop and try out a Vintage 6G6b Brownface bassman if they have one ?? Thats what started it all for me a long time ago.. Also there is guys out there that make Brownface Clones.. Gomez amp or Lux-tone Frugal amps Marsh amps etc. Really, no biggie your amp is fine enjoy it!!! It's not the amp it's all in the way you play.. The amp is just your voice!!!

I grew up playing on a '65 Super Reverb and I loved every minute of it. Although over the years I've developed a preference for brownface Fenders for playing surf, I'm still more than happy to play through a vintage blackface amp any chance I get.

Good to hear it.. I play my Brown amps for surf.. and I play my Blackface for Rock and country.. However, the 66 Bassman works really well for surf!! But you got to have a reverb unit!!!

Bassmans are great! brownface or blackface both are killer for any genre I also love Dario's "El Sonido"
I use to play an AA864 64' Pre-CBS Bassman religiously for a couple of years till I got my Showman and then moved over to my Bandmaster full-time now.

All piggyback amps sound nasally (compressed) thats the signature tone of closed back cabs.
I play through a tonemaster 212 w/ celestion vintage 30, and through a
64' bassman 212 cab w/ v30s as well.. Both are just the opposite of what
you said "nasally/compressed". My cabs with my blonde bassman amps are
big dynamic punchy jangle boxes.

Yes our Bassmans and our Bandmaster's can be a bit nasally/compressed.. However, The closed back cabinet in very directional and leaves you with the feeling of compression.. I think you are using a great speaker with the V30 Celestion.. I like usng JBL D120f for that in your face crisp sound!!!

I'm a hobbyist with a Twin Reverb II (Rivera era). It has a black faceplate, but I have doubts to whether its a classic blackface, silverface, or brown sound. I think these amps are on their own, but maybe closer to a blackface. There are schematics on the web for converting it to a classic blackface circuit so obviously it is not the classic circuit to begin with. I'm not a tone snob, but, with the JBLs, I would call it a very good surf amp. I just don't know of its browner or blacker.
The only brown amp I've played through was a bassman. As good as it sounded, it wasn't for me. I like a cleaner sound than that.

Rotnroby... that's one right sexy bastard ya have thar!!
beautiful amp!
still dont agree with nasally and focused thing. BUT.. I should have said
"as it pertains to Brownface fender amps" (vox sounds terrible in closed back, as would my drip rail princeton I modded with a 12" celestion)
I'll agree there is no comparison to an
open back cab's spacial qualities (if the amp is built good enough)
but that is simply because of the sonic spread out the back. Youre
getting reflectivity happening everywhere. Plus the speaker ends
up being less efficient just hanging there with absolutely no back pressure
so cone breakup happens sooner and your instruments clarity is compromised. ( open back audio speakers/monitors would be horrible)
btw.. its always the openback amp guy that gets told to turn down before me
and my closeback because his sound is EVERYWHERE on stage
