I agonized where to put you Ferenc...you have such a damn fine band and I listen to you all the time, especially Golden State and Year of the Rooster. And you guys play out often and crank out the albums.

These aren't in any particular order, and I didn't sit down and come up with a magic number of them...
Mermen
Space Cossacks & The Madeira (had to include both)
The Penetrators
Tremolo Beer Gut
Slacktone
Bambi Molesters
Treblespankers
Laika & the Cosmonauts

It's too hard to pick. I will post the 5 that really pulled me into the genre:
The Bomboras
Satan's Pilgrims
The Ghastly Ones
The Tiki Tones
Phantom Surfers
These were favorites in the 90s. They still are, however, there are many more to the list now.

Thanks to Jon Jacob and Ted for mentioning us. One day we'll get some new stuff out.
I consider the Bomboras, the Ghastly Ones and Satan's Pilgrims almost up there with the classics of all time. For newer bands I like the Verb and the Nebulas. But I'm really diggin' the Thunderchiefs and really looking forward to their recordings.

My question is how can you just pick 5? My favorite is definitely the Mermen, because my mother listened to Floyd and I also happen to like prog rock quite a bit. After that it gets very difficult as I like the fast sound of Slacktone, the Treblemakers, the Phantom Surfers, Man or Astroman, Dick Dale, Jon & The Nightriders, and even the Atlantics can be fast on occasion. I also like the stuff with more melody, like the Fathoms, the Surf Dusters, Laika and the Cosmonauts, the Sandals, the Falcons, the Blue Stingrays, Shig and Buzz, the Halibuts, and Los Straitjackets. Then I also really like the groups who do both like the Surf Kings, the Neptunes, the Space Cossacks, the Krontjong Devils..... and probably others. To limit it to 5 is hopeless....
And I'm sure there's more I like out there. Surfapalooza, come on guys.. next summer come to Chicago for a megashow. That would have to draw from Milwaukee, Rockford, Madison, Indy, Grand Rapids, and South Bend. I know I would be there.

That was difficult. I looked at my post and realized that I missed the Huntington Cads. I think they should have been in there.

Well I have watched this thread too. I know there is no way for me to pick just five. Old gaurd or between or new gaurd. I believe that if it is Surf music it is number one with me. I have been studying all the bands mentioned on this forum, and to make a pick is not in my cards. They are all number one with me.

Live they showed some qualities, but the songwriting lacked.
They always made it a point not being a surfband. This is SG101, soâ¦

The Space Agency (UK band) - amazing home-made recordings taking it where the Ventures in Space left off.
Reluctant Aquanauts - ripping Eddie & the Showman style licks.
Volcanics - all around fun frat-surf.
Satan's Pilgrims - classic and influential band that uses all old gear.
The Ghastly One's - great originals and tight as OJ's glove.

When I started getting into surf (not too long ago) the bands that got me hooked were:
The Ghastly Ones
Los Straightjackets
The Nebulas
The Bomboras
Satans Pilgrims
I know it's not the "classic" stuff, but after listening to it, it inspired me to check out older and newer stuff.
