Recently, I randomly read the reviews of Manuel & Renegades 45s by Phil Dirt at reverbcentral.com which made me look for them on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hl_O53MCuYY). Does anyone have more information about this 1963 band from Bernardino? Was Manuel (Rodrigues) portuguese, or at least descendent of portuguese people (Rodrigues with an S is a very typical name).
Cheers,
Fred

According to the description in that YouTube vid, his last name was spelled incorrectly on the sleeve.

"Rev Up" b/w "Trans-Miss-Yen" is a killer 45. "Woody Walk" is a great song, too - it's on Surf Creature Vol. 2, as well as the _Surf Creature _CD.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Thanks for the memory reminder. I saw them back in the day at a roller rink in Downey - Skate O Rama? On Saturday nights they put up a stage and sound and we danced the night away. Saw many surf bands and cover bands there..... wow

Happy Sunsets!

I believe this is what is called a Manuel override.

Here' some info that might be of interest. In the early 60's I attended Chino High School (located in Chino, CA which is about 30 miles due east of Los Angeles) A friend and classmate of mine was the brother of Manuel Rodrigues (yes, Portuguese and with an "S"), John. Manuel was about three years our senior. The Rodrigues family was a very nice as well as a hard working family who owned and operatered a dairy, had land interests and other investments in and around the Chino valley. I recall on a number of occasions, when visitng John, hearing the band practicing in the "recreatiion room"--they had a beautiful home. On at least one occasion I saw the band play at a school assembly. I don't recall all the band members names, I think there was four, but the drummer was a guy named Corky Ballenger(sp). Some additional trivia: one morning when arriving at school I happened to glance out to the street running in front of the high school and there was Manuel cruising in his brand new 1963 white "split window" Corvette Stingray with Mickey Thompson mags. WOW--having your own band and a hot car--lucky guy!

Thanks for all the information! I was now looking for the button of "like this" just to remember I wasn't on facebook! Smile

Yes, Manuel Rodrigues went to Chino High School and was not from San Bermardino as is shown on some sites. His family owned a big dairy on Chino-Corona Rd. Back then, dairymen were either Dutch or Portuguese and that's why the last name is spelled with an "s" not a "z" Johnny Alves was his cousin and also in the band. I dated Bobby S. for a while when he was in the band but I believe he got kicked out. Corky Ballenger was the drummer and a couple of years younger. He later became a plot on the Goodyear Blimp during Raider games when they were in LA. In high school, Manuel dated a cute little gal with very short red hair named DeeDee. Later, Manuel got married and lived in a house next to his parents' home which was almost identical. He had a younger brother named Johnny. And yes, I well remember his Corvette. I think it was a Stingray but not certain. It has been a few years.
