Permalink 70s Silverface Fender reverb tank?

New Topic

Are these tanks much different to the sixties ones or the reissues? I notice the input/output sockets are in a different place.

And while I'm on the topic, why on earth are the control panels of Fender tanks upside-down when you face the tank? As far as I'm concerned, to be facing the knobs as you would face the knobs on your amp, you've got to be standing behind your amp if the tank's grill cloth is facing the same way as your amp's. Is this just a design flaw that stuck?

Before the extensive use of P.A. systems, the musicians used to stand behin their amps which primarily had to provide amplification for the audience. I guess that could explain the 'upside-down' control scheme which then was applied to the reveb unit as well.
So I think you can't really call it a design flaw - but it stuck anyway!

they're coming to take me away, hahaaa ...

Forgive me if im wrong but i think those units have an extra tube that eliminates the overdrive and possibly some other issues from the earlier units. Some say it's the best reverb out there and others prefer the flaws of the original fender units.

Yeah you just turn them @ a 180 and your cool... Thats How I roll.. The 70's reverb units kinda suck as they use a solid state preamp section..

I had one a few years ago. A 76' I think. I hated it. Well, that's harsh. Compared to my neighbor's 60's tank, it just wasn't the same. They do have lots of echo-ish sound, but took the "spring" out of the "twang."

You'd have your own sound for sure. I'm just hooked on the sound of the earlier units.

I don't see any transistors here...
