I know this has probably been discussed before.
But has any surf band done a surf cover of the Cure's "Killing an Arab"?
I just played that last night at a bar while waiting to see some friends rockabilly bands play.

I'm pretty sure the name of the band was called The Surf Motherfuckers, but I don't remember the name of the comp it was on...

I just won the long out of print Outlaws CD on eBay. The band was a Joe Meek produced British instro group of the early 60s (although they were also later the backing band for different singers). Haven't recieved the CD yet but judging by the five sound samples found here it should be pretty good. I especially like Husky Team and Smoke Signals.

Klas, you will love this CD. It's GREAT. Primo Brit-instro, Joe Meek's answer to the Shadows. You should also try to track down "The Outlaws Ride Again: The Singles As & Bs" (See For Miles Records) which is also chock full of great stuff, including a couple of tracks of a very young Ritchie Blackmore doing his best Hank Marvin impressions! (Ritchie took over as the second or even third lead guitarist in the Outlaws at some point, and remained with the group til the end, circa '65, as they morphed into a more straightforward r&r/r&b outfit.)

Ivan, I suspected that you already had the Dream Of The West album. I'll definitely keep an eye out for Outlaws Ride Again.

I just bought an original LP copy of The Ventures Play Telstar at this hole-in-the-wall record shop in downtown Columbus for $3. I gotta go back, too; they have an Astronauts LP that I really would love to snatch up!

Went to Amoeba over the weekend:
V/A - Surf Creature 2 & 3
V/A - Surfer's Mood 2
V/A - The Estrus Cocktail Companion
Astronauts - Rarities
Dick Dale - Better Shred Than Dead (it was really cheap)
-Warren
— That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I just bought 'Twang Thang - The Duane Eddy Anthology'. Two discs of pure excellence! If you don't own it, do yourself a favor and go get it now!

YES!! That CD RULES! The Atlantics' entire second album, 'Now It's Stompin' Time,' is on here, starting with The Crusher through the last track on the CD (Stomping Time). One of the most perfect surf/instro albums EVER, as far as I'm concerned! SOS (Stomp On Stomp), The Crusher, Shark Attack, Arabian Surf, Gremlin From The Kremlin, Stomping Time, Stompede - they're all just incredible! The first album (basically all the tracks before The Crusher) was a bit too derivative of the Shadows but has many, many fine moments as well, including of course Bombora, Moon Man, Adventures in Paradise, and an incredible version of Dark Eyes (check out the guitar playing on that one - by Theo Penglis, what a guitarist!).
Anyway, I hope you like the CD.

I think the second volume is a bit weaker than the first, as it basically has material from their third album, which was released within a year of their first one! There was a fair amount of filler on that one, understandably so. The rest of the Vol. 2 CD is all their singles post their third album, and while some of them are classics (Rumble And Run, Mirage, Giant) there are again some that leave you scratching your head. Boo Boo Stick Beat? Chief Wooping Koff? Golfinger? Peter Gunn? Nevertheless, with songs like Giant, Rumble & Run, War Of The Worlds, Dimitrius, Express to Bagdad, and a handful of others, I'd agree with Big Tiki Dude and say it's also a must-have.

Yeah that's what I meant, not all essential, but for the few killer songs, track it down. I keep wanting to make a best of cdr of the 2.

I have both of those too. Some filler, especially on the 2nd one, but man is that stuff OUT there. Great material, it must have sounded alien when it came out in the 60's. Both are must haves in my book as well. Awesome stuff.

Ok, I'm obviously lagging on my surf purchases - but I only just got the new Nebulas last week....an outstanding release. Muy-muy killer album. I also got a copy of The Anacondas from The Netherlands (told ya I was behind)- I don't know how to describe it other than exotic-surf-spy-fi psychedelic mood-music...dig it....a lot.
Based on the reactions I can see I'm gonna have to pick up the new Pollo as well. My wallet thanks you...
