Yeah, me too. That always happens. At the last show I went to in Chicago it was impossible to talk to anyone between sets without going outside. Lame.
And how can anyone who was there forget the extremely inappropriate super loud techno music that was played at the end of Satan's Pilgrims homecoming set in Portland in 2005? Sure cleared that place in a hurry.

Brian,
Doug Fir did it again in '06. I'd heard chatter that the DJ was supposed to spin garage and whatnot, but after like 2 tunes (at most) there was that great 808 bass and thumping beat that makes surf music what it is, done by such masters as Dr. Dre and 50 Cent. Who can deny their contribution to the surf scene?!?!

Wew were once fired from an outdoors gig for being too loud. OK We decided not to play any more after the 3rd request from someone with the Festival committee but the end result was the same. The thing was, we had a crowd around that was enjoying it and they were buying their food from the vendors and watching us but this lady kept insisting we were driving people away. WE had already turned the amps down to the point where we couldn't hear over the drummer but she was standing right in front of the stage saying, "You're supposed to be background music. I should be able to talk over you in my regular voice." We weren't even usingthe PA. After 3/4 of a set of this I announced to the crowd that we were apparently too loud for outdoors and the show was over. There were a lot of disappointed people but I won't work under those conditions.

Our set at the Mai Kai later on that evening was perfect volume-wise... We were in a smaller room (The Samoa/Tahiti room), and the walls just seemed to suck the sound in... Probably one of our best shows that we put on last year...
Hey Fez -- glad to hear you guys are back at The Hukilau this year! I also thought your set in the Samoa/Tahiti room was really, really great. The volume was rich and full, but not at all painful or unreasonable. I think all that wood really makes for a great room to play in.
Haole Kats!!! will be down at the Jetsetter Lounge for a wedding on 9/7, and playing a regular gig there on 9/8, but we won't be able to catch your set there on 9/9, because we'll be playing a private luau down in Boca Raton!  Arrrrgggghhh... The party will be fun, of course, and I know we'll have a great time, and we'll get to hear/see you at Hukilau, but would have loved to hear you at Jetsetter (my favorite place to play these days).

Not to get to off topic here, but I realy hate/crack up when I see people walking by a band playing somewhere outside or in a resturuant, and it may be a bit loud. but not excruciating. and they have to plug thier ears, or hold their hands over their ears like a siren is going off.
I mean shit I've seen littel 2 and 3 year old kids dancing 10 ft infront of a band(with no problem with the volume) at the surf museum, while people walking by 50 ft away are running because it hurts to much. wimps ha ha ha

We had a lame bartender do this to The C(h)oral Dukes everytime he had to walk by. I have it on tape somewhere. I'm not sure if it was the volume or the music though.

When I can remember, I put a box of Fin-Dicator branded earplugs in a prominent place near the stage when we play live. I stick a label on the individual packs of ear plugs that say "The Fin-Dicators, save your ears for when you come to hear us!" Some people grab handfulls of ear plugs. Others look at me like I'm trying to give them a condom or something.
Yes, that finger-in-the-ear behavour especially when we don't play loud always cracks me up too. I like to point out that person and say some wise-ass thing like "look, the music critic is in the house tonight".
