One of the first things that attracted me to this site was the site logo - a modern day surfer ripping a nice wave. The picture, as opposed to an antiqued nose rider image from the 60s (although I am one of those), made me think instru-surf music wasn’t stuck in the 60s like I thought, but is a current and relevant genre in the 2010s. (2010s …sheesh, man how time flies).

In addition to members being nice to newcomers and providing valuable info and critique to musicians, the surf music knowledgebase here is clearly the best in the world, as evident by some members being sources for, and have written, several books on the history.

The CD comp at year-end is a great target to shoot for, and the quality is impressive. I suspect most site members are musicians, and many are writing and recording new tunes constantly. I do wish more of the seasoned pros would share their new stuff throughout the year. Maybe there should be a separate forum called something like “The Studio” just for new releases/works in progress to be shared. The classics are the foundation, and covers of those are cool, but the new stuff being written is really exciting and interesting. Anyway, all the input we have received here has been extremely helpful.

I looked recently at some of the surf bands on ReverbNation, and see many hold very high positions on their local charts. Whenever a TV show or movie needs a “cool” scene, there is usually a tracking surf guitar. Maybe it is underground, but it appears a lot of people still like it.

Great site.

Thanks guys.

It's interesting you interpreted the logo in the way you did. My wife made that logo for me, and she used a photo of a surfer she took when we were in Santa Cruz in April, 2004 to see the Surf Coasters. There was no ulterior motive for using that photo. It was just what she had.

When the site first went interactive with the forums and stuff, some people complained because the photo was a modern surfer with a wet suit using a short board. Some people suggested I find a shirt-less, vintage long board surfer photo and redo it. Laughing

I ride a shortboard wearing a wetsuit. And a leash.

I like the logo - like SurferBill says - it shows surf music is modern and evolving and not stuck in the 1960's.

I like the photo - it's not a pro surfer doing something super radical, it's just a normal guy surfing a normal wave.
