Permalink Aria DM-380 bridge replacement (strat trem content) HELP !!

New Topic

Hello all, I'm having problems with a new project guitar and I need some help.

I bought the new Aria DM-380 for modding purposes, it's a mosrite looking knock off with strat features (strat trem, fender scale). To my surprise, it sounds really good, twang with gibson type beef, so I really like the guitar.

But of course it comes with loads of problems one being the bridge, it's a fender style 2 pivot synchronized tremolo. It does this crazy rattling sound on some strings and the trem arm feels like crap, so I thought of changing it...

... but the pivots are distanced 2.5" instead of the usual 2.2". So I can't just pop in a replacement (damn design).

So I think I have only two choices (or a third expensive one).

1 - Get a Fender regular 6 screws-trem bridge and screw in only the middle 4 screws as the two outter ones are blocked by the pivot shafts.

2 - Change the saddles and block but keep the original plate where they are connected, going this route I have to hope that the new block will have its screw holes at the right place to connect to the bridge plate.

The string spacing of the bridge is 2 1/16".

3 - Expensive option : fill the holes with some wood and start over (really can't afford to have this done).

Any help at all would be appreciated.

The Wilkinson WV2 strat bridge - one round mount hole - one slotted mount hole. http://www.axesrus.com/axehardware.htm

Hey soulgolem, I also ordered a DM-380 from MF. I really like the look of the guitar. I've read about the issue you are having from a couple of other sites. I'm curoius to see if I will have the same problem. If you go for the suggestion from crumble I'd love to know how it turns out! I may go for the same thing. Thanks! Very Happy

p.s. I found this link for it with detailed measurements:

I dunno, that Wilky WV2 has some wiggle room (54-56mm) but the OP needs approx 63mm spacing (2.5") Am I missing something?

That bridge wouldn't work, like cambeezy said, this guitar needs 63mm spacing, in other words, the pivot holes can't be in front of the saddles.

I decided to fill the holes and change the bridge to a regular strat bridge and see how this works, though I hear I should get a mexican one because the string spacing of the Aria is a little bit smaller than a USA strat bridge.

Have you checked out Stetsbar or Trem King? They might be an option. I should be getting my 380 today!

Well soulgolem, I got mine last night. Pretty nice guitar but I noticed the same issue you're having. The first thing I'm going to do is put a heavier gauge of strings on. The ones that are on it are terrible. Hopefully that will help a bit! I got the sunburst version and it really is pretty!
Good luck with your project! Let us all know how it turns out!

I just picked this up for 150 bucks at the local Music Go Round.

So far no buzzes or rattles...

I couldn't pass up a Surf Green Guitar!!!

you guys got any soundclips or real world opinion? Hell for $150 i would like to find one, cant be any worse than my MIM strat that sits in a corner.. its all mass made crap in the end:)

I wanna play just like him when i grow up...

I am far from a gear snob, and I really wanted to like this guitar. The biggest problem is that it seems to be a real value until you account for the modifications you are going to have to make....

First of all, the tremolo is terrible. Mine has an issue in the G string guide where it goes sharp at the slightest use of the tremolo. Second of all, no roller saddles. Third, the tuners are terrible. No matter what I do to remedy this, they still detune.

Of course, all of this can be fixed, but at what cost? A new tremolo cannot simply be added. Due to it's scale, body mods would have to be made in order to retrofit it. The tuners would cost another 80 bucks or more. Roller saddles would cost another 20 dollars. Lets not forget the need of a new nut.

Anyway, after agonizing over it, I have returned mine and have now ordered an Eastwood Sidejack. I suggest anyone looking for a good Mosrite clone do their research. It cost slightly more than the Aria but is very worth it.

So I've been playin mine now for about a month now and the only complaints I have with it are that the fret ends are sharp and that I don't care to much for the sound of the pickups.

Kinda dull/dark sounding compared to my Squier Strat, but I have never played anything with P90's in it.

I still don't have any tuning issues when bending or using the bar but I did end up with a couple fret buzzes when I lowered the action and went to fatter strings.

I am going to replace the PU's with the Tonerider Vintage 90's, then take it in to have a fret job/set up done.

Thats a bummer about yours Kill.

Not a bummer at all. This Eastwood that I got is simply amazing. It will surely do until I can save up for a Hallmark later this year. If you have not checked out the Hallmark guitars, do yourself a favor. They are being touted as better than the original Mosrites at the moment.
