I hope the 4th convention is all tribute bands. Writing your own material, creating your own act, developing your own sound is SO overrated. Especially when you can rip some other band's songs/act/sound for free & usually get paid for it. And keep some original band from getting booked somewhere.
But I digress. Really looking forward to seeing the Space Cossacks, Space Rangers & Surfside IV!

by the way I posted Ferenc's version(better worded) and spell checked.
Sorry for the Mosqui-toes Craig,
Funny thing is, it doesn't come up as mis-spelled,
but Reverb does,
Yeah what's with that?
But then again so does google...

well this I can post about, because there is no bands involved.
I had mentioned it in the review thread for the 2009 convention.
But I will spill about that now/here.
Monday Aug. 9th.
For those that are hanging around, a day after the convention,
and or are locals,
and want to go to these places.
I am thinking about, having everybody meeting at,
The Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum at 8 or 9. am
Go to Breakfast. few different places in downtown HB that are really good.
Then Caravan/carpool down to the Wedge in Newport Beach, at the end of the Balboa Peninsula. While there, see the Gillette Mansion, that Dick Dale lived in. The Come back up a bit to the Downtown Balboa Beach pier area.
And see the plaque that is dedicated to the Rendezvous Ballroom, that surf bands played at in the 60's, and burnt down in 66 I believe.
Then Check out the Balboa Fun Zone/Carnival area,(where Dick Dale played at a Ice Cream Parlor before he started playing at the Rendezvous.) Then go to a Beach Hut/Tiki/Surf style restaurant with surf records sleeves on the ceiling, at the Hyatt Hotel corner of Beach Blvd. and PCH in Huntington Beach.
Then Check out the Surfing Museum, there is some surf music related stuff in there, and also a huge selection of surf cds, and dvds for sale.
Then if anybody is up for some drinks,
I always go to Don the Beachcomber in Sunset Beach, 5 miles North of HB
for all night Happy Hour on Mondays, 1/2 price drinks and appetizers.
sound like a cool way to wind down after 4 days of reverb madness?
I thought so.

Thank you very much Jeff for making this happen and thanx for including Wadadali Riders in it. I'm very excited to come to California again and proud to be part of the event.
We now have to finish working on this sunday event... hope to get good news soon.
Plus, when I come to California, I really feel home...

So you are going to walk out if you hear a cover of a 60's surf classic or a Shadows song?

I for one am very much looking forward to seeing Abdel play. I'm a big fan and with such a great backing band it's bound to be a highlight of the show.

I don't think I'd want to see a band doing all surf covers, but The Shadows music is still obscure to the American ear so it will sound fresh and original. (Sadly) I'd say that if you didn't know it was a cover band, you'd wonder how The Men of Mystery came up with so many great songs.

Of course not. There is a difference between a band doing covers & a tribute band.

No, but back when I would scour the LA Weekly & the OC Weekly for venues to book my old band, I would see venues that ONLY booked tribute bands. Is it me, or am I the only one who sees a problem there?

Hmm, I thought this convention was all about doing cool covers? A celebration, so to speak.
