Permalink New Amp Day- Vox AC30vr

New Topic

After seeing the Shadows live last week, and being a big Hank Marvin fan I decided I would get a Vox AC30cc1. Well I went to my favourite music store,
proceeded to the Vox area, tried lifting an AC30cc1(I'm an old guy with a crook back),no way it was too darn heavy. The sales guy came over asked if I needed assistance,I told him I was Interested in an AC30 but for an old guy like me it was too heavy. He said wait here I might have a solution for you.
He came back with a Vox AC30vr a hybrid AC30 type amp. The amp room was full of headbangers and AC/DC wannabees, so they let me play in the drum room which was empty for refurbishment.
Tone wise this amp has the sound I wanted crisp clean vox tones and Vox overdrive at sensible volumes . Loudness well I cranked it up full bore and it was ear splitting so it should be gig worthy.Once I played it I knew this amp was coming home with me .

Here's a few obsevations I have made on this amp.

no effects loop, headphone jack or line out,two foot switchable channels with separate eq(footswitch not included), very quiet operation (minimal hiss at idle)great looks and build quality, the main power fuse is located in the IEC socket at the back of the amp.

This amp arrived in the store yesterday the very first and only one they got,I think this amp will be a top seller for vox at around 1/3rd the price of a CC1 and around 23 kgs in weight and a lot of tone options.
Thanks for reading my post and enjoy the pictures.

Definitely a nice looking amp.

How is the reverb on those amps?

Stacy

the reverb is digital, not Surf drippy or glassy Fender sounding, it's on par with most amp reverbs. I dont use it anyway as I use stacked delays, as my sound is more Rautalanka than drippy Surf.

Nice..now you have to get one of those cool chrome stands for it Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Interesting....I have never heard of Rautalanka, thanks for the link.

I am going to have to look into some of those Finnish bands.

You didn't miss anything not buying the ACC30cc - I bought one a year or so ago. I did a handful of gigs with it but I got the shop to take it back. In comparison to my Peavey Delta Blues it had a thinner more brittle sound, was quieter and the reverb was useless. Even through my goldback (like the bluebacks but higher wattage) speaker cab it wasn't great - and, as you say, weighed a stupid amount - especially when the Peavey sounds better and is much lighter with smaller transformers.

I do have the handwired AC15TV - that sounds really good but hasn't really had the reliability that you'd expect from its huge price. I had to replace the internal fuse-holder because the one they had fitted was so cheap and nasty it was arcing and it also gets through valves quickly because of poor ventilation.

Youth and enthusiasm are no match for age and treachery.

I didn't know the Shadows were still performing.

This amp doesn't go to 11........matter of fact it doesn't go to anything at all!!

There's no limit to the volume knob, you just keep turning and turning untill the laws of physics start to desintegrate and the universe implodes.

Matter is just energy waiting to happen.

sweet Vox dude...It interesting how the hybrids are taking off - I'm still using an AC30CC2 and I'm surprised by all the negative comments on the 'net about them...mine sounds about 95% like a mid 60's AC30...

Maybe I just lucked out and got one when the workers had extra rice for breakfast Very Happy

AC30's start at 11 and go up to 30

That's why they called em AC 30's all controls go to 30 Smile

the vox hybrids are very nice sounding i thing like in most forums on the web that most are against change and this is why i like the beatles so much they tried every amp vox made. now because of that everyone wants a piece of the old solid state action. pretty much the vox ac30vr sounds like a cross between a defiant and a viscount and some of the 7120 hybrid sounds.

these are the biggest fights in guitar

1 has to be tube amp but then you dont want to pay for it ooops no rectifier tube almost worthless (only idiots) say that.

2 tone caps hahahaha some are warmer right (more idiots)
in my les paul i have wima caps everyone thinks there pio hahaha

3 nkt275 fuzz face whatever

4 did jimmy page use a maestro or a tone bender who really cares ...

so dont fight the crap in music have while you are doing it ...... and the things i said are part of your fun FORGET what i said.

I had an AC15C1 and it was great...but heavy!

I switched to a Vox Valvetronix VT80+, and I love it.
Wish the reverb was more like the AC, but other than that, the VT80+
is way more versatile....much easier to record, as well.

i would not buy this cause its cheaper but because its got a great sound vox ac30vr. and it has really good overdrive both of them. the digital reverb is is very fenderish but passable. if i was to change anything it would change the 12ax7 to a mullard. and maybe the speakers but that's part of the sound like the old vox viscount.
