Permalink Japanese Mosrites?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 3 Next

Hey, new guy. Been hangin' out a while. Awesome site.

Anyways, I have a Jag on order (can't wait!!!) and I was just goofing off online looking at various Jag related content... I came across this insane Japanese Musician's Friend type site. It seems they sell new Mosrite's that, in my humble opinion, look pretty awesome! Here's a few links.

http://www.ikebe-gakki.com/shopping/goods/goods_detail.php?category_id=1&sub_category_id=13&brand=446&view=1&count=12&sort=1&search_status=1&id=126883

The light blue goes for 128,000 yen, which is roughly 1500 bucks. The red 188,000, so a little more. Still, these look amazing. This is news to me. I wasn't aware you could get NEW Mosrites, sans from a shady looking Ed Roman's Worlds Finest Guitars...

Am I a total noob or is this news? Anyone have any experience?

I'm completely jealous of some of the guitars available over there! If you navigate that site about you can see some pretty interesting stuff!

I have a 2000 model Excellent 65, which I believe predates the lawsuit that forced Mosrite Japan to become Fillmore (the same ones Ed sells now), and to also put "Mosrite of Classic" on the headstock. (I'm not sure how the original owner got it though.) Those look like the original copies like mine. They are almost always seen as very faithful reproductions... the Fillmores & the ones Ed sells, not so much. (I've never played one of the newer ones, I'm just going by what some have said here.)

They do have a mouth-watering selection of many guitars there... Yamahas and MIJ Fenders to name a couple. One of these days I might have to make a special trip there.

Zen,
I actually ran into these people at a vintage guitar show several years back. I was able to trade a restored '66 white Ventures model for a limited edition "Nokie Edwards" model they offered. It wasn't cheap. While I don't usually like to sell/trade any of my Mosrite stash, this was an opportunity and that rare exception that couldn't be missed.

The quality is great - but the guitar sounds a tad different than a '60s Mosrite.
They also play a bit easier. So, in all, for me, it was a step up from the '66 I traded.

BTW - Check out Hallmark guitars.. they make great stuff and Bob Shade, the owner, is very customer conscious.

happy hunting..

This is cool my friend. I love the blue one!!!!
I have tried one of the new Mosrite's, there is shop dedicated to that in Livorno, that will also participate to the festival by the way with these guitars on sale, and they sound excellent. I really loved it and waiting to have some $$$ to buy one.

If you are looking for Japanese sites you should have to see also on Ishibashi that is one of the greatest shops in Japan.

I remember in Tokyo shops with rooms FULL of Mosrite's, new and old.

If you were going to spend big money on a jap mosrite , I say save a couple more bucks and buy a vintage one. I have two 65 and a 66 and love them. I haven't played any new ones but for that money I wouldn't bother. I have heard great things about hallmark.
Stay away from the univox copies. They are really cool but really just toys.

Lots of great info and people over there.
Hit me up if you ever need anything.
Congrats on the Jag. Also a very cool surf guitar!

Here's a shop in Bakersfield that has new Mosrites, the same ones you can get from Roman's without the Roman attitude http://www.frontporchmusic.net/products/guitars.html

Is there really going to be a night and day difference?
Cause I've seen a used Japanese Mosrite going for about $1600, which has been sitting for awhile, so I'm sure I can get the price lowered and I'm not really looking to spend $4000 on a vintage one.
So am I still going to feel like I'm playing a Mosrite or is it going to be completely different from a vintage one?

The Excellents are aptly named. I got mine from a forum member here, who was only selling it because he got an original '66 Mosrite at a bargain price. I was able to play both and there weren't any appreciable differences. Can you tell which is which?

I'm going to guess the one on the right is the vintage one?
I've heard people say the pickups are lacking, but I've also heard the same about AVRI Jazzmasters vs Vintage Jazzmasters and I think my AVRI encompasses all the original Jazzmaster tone I could ever want.
So maybe I'm just not that picky, haha.

Jap? Are we still fighting WWII? You probably don't see many Japanese in Iowa but I would consider using another word.

Definitely the '66 on the right.

As for Jazzmasters, I own a vintage Jazzmaster and it is a better sounding guitar. AVRI is almost on par with my '73. AVRIs can be really great, I do think they need a pickup swap though.

Also, while we're on the subject of RI Mosrites, does anybody know the differences between all the Fillmore models?
Cause there's "Mosrite of California," "Mosrite of Classic," and "Mosrite of USA."

I'd say that you'll feel like you are playing a Mosrite - although a bit refined from the early 60s models - that's to be expected with CNC machines and better manufacturing techniques over the last 40+ years.
BUT -
It certainly won't sound exactly like a 60's Mosrite. That's the difference between a $4000.00 original and a $1600.00 new offering..
the same as it usually pertains with strats, teles, jags, jazzers, lespauls.. name-your-brand.

BTW.. anyone here read an article in Vintage Guitar magazine about Gibson's problems (they had production shut down by Uncle Slam) and the Lacey Act vis a vis where guitar tonewood supplies come from?
Seems our bloated, overactive government has nothing better to do than make sure Brazilian rosewood. etc.. (which we don't even grow.. jungle is kinda scarce here in the U.S.A.) doesn't even (maybe) make it anymore to your favorite instrument. Pray this nonsense doesn't hit swamp ash. Hence the $4K Mosrite, the $35K strat.. ad naseum.. because the woods used to make them are either in very short supply (the black market is always more expensive) or suddenly illegal. (That really ups the black market price).
Another quite unnecessary economic distortion brought to you by big government. Thank whatever God you pray to that China and India largely ignore this C.I.T.E.S. baloney.

You are aware that that wood has been made illegal to import because people are destroying the habitat that houses the trees that the wood is taken from. It's one thing to have a sustainable logging industry, and it is a completely different thing to have a economically irresponsible logging industry that gives zero thought to habitat conservation and offsetting what is harvested with new-growth.

The $4k Mosrite and $35K strat have nothing to do with wood scarcity.

Also, perhaps you would be so kind to people on this board and go back and refine the paragraph you wrote. It appears to just be rambling, incomplete thoughts, over done parenthetical thoughts, etc...

Ah yes. Jakey.. Rolling Eyes

Sorry you don't see the wood connection - supply and demand.. etc. and really don't want to waste finger typing explaining it to you. I have my opinion you have your (wrongly formed ) opinion. Who really cares?

Nahh! (or "No" parenthetically)

Holy off topic, Batman.

(Although, being the tree hugging hippie that I am, I have to agree with Jake.)

For whatever reason I just don't feel comfortable with vintage guitars. I don't like playing something that I have to worry about damaging, keeping original, devaluing, etc. So the reissues really appeal to me.

Some of the stuff available in Japan is awesome. I didn't know Fender Japan had their own production that was unavailable in the states. Besides that, some of those Tokai's look amazing.

Yet another reason to visit Japan...

davidj..
The "Mosrite of California," - I'm sure means Semie Moseley's original Mosrite company.
"Mosrite of Classic," is Ed Roman of Las Vegas, Nevada. He claims to own the Mosrite name. As a practical matter in the real world, this is not the case.

and "Mosrite of USA." - I really don't know who this is or was.

Supply and Demand? The wood in Strats and Mosrites is widely available today. Granted the fretboards may be embargoed wood, but that isn't what is making the prices high on those(vintage maple neck strat will fetch more than a rosewood neck). It is artist recognition and the cult of collectibility that drives those prices high.

And I don't think the Rosewood on strats is now illegal.

ZenZombie..
that's cool.. At least you state your case politely.. (take a cue, jake!)

With no apologies to anyone, I'm the guy who drives the 426 gas guzzling Chrysler Hemi, plays the brazilian rosewood or ebony fingerboard on his guitar, smokes the Cuban cigar hanging out of his mouth while sipping homemade moonshine.
I want these things because they are either stupidly and artificially unobtainable or so called P.C. types tell me I can't or shouldn't have them. My little case in point of what drives (my) consumer demand.

Isn't this still a great country?

Zenzombie: also consider the Hallmark 60 Custom, which are really good for the money
