I wasn't really plucking the string with the hammer-off finger, just brushing it lightly (not pulling straight up but at a slight angle) otherwise I wasn't getting much volume on the second note.
You just need to build a little muscle strength, that will come with practice.
Pappa_Surf
Do you start with both notes fretted then simply lift off the finger on the first note, or is it more of a lift off with the first finger while fretting with the second simultaneously (sort of a reverse hammer-on)? Probably I just need more practice, but I want to make sure my technique is right before I learn a bad habit.
You have the right idea. A reverse hammer on would be a pull off. So, depending on the whether trill goes up or down, start with the finger farther up the neck, or not. The most important thing to do is keep a steady rhythm.

Damn, Ferenc. I don't know how to say it. This is frakkin awesome! This is EXACTLY the kind of thing I've been looking for. I'm ok at picking up the lead line, using my Tascam trainer, but the rhythm line and a lot of the accents (drones, double stops, etc) give me problems. Thanks SO much. Adult beverage of your choice when I see you at the next convention.

Wow, Ferenc, what a wonderful job! Kudos!
This song may very well be my favorite surf song of the past decade. A true master-class in songwriting - and phrasing. It never ever fails to give me chills. (Yep, I got them just now!)
Thanks for doing this.

Everyone on the site should own TWO copies of the Frankie & The Poolboys album!
The Consolidated Union of Aquatic Facilities Maintenance Persons and Polish Strippers should make Ewa on the Beach their anthem.
And I really do think these two instructional videos take the whole idea of music instruction up to the level of an entertainment and an art form. I'm pretty sure Ferenc could sell this sort of thing, and be sure that not everyone buying it was even trying to learn to play the songs. Not everyone watching This Old House or Yankee Workshop or all those cooking shows is actually building or woodworking or cooking.
If it were a syndicated show, maybe he could call it Surf Guitar 101. Wait, I think that's taken. Surf Guitar 201?

Couldn't agree more. Same for Brian's quote about how everyone here needs to own the Frankie & the Poolboys album.
These videos are great, BTW.

No doubt Brian said that to tick me off for..
A: Saying something to Ferenc without fully engaging my brain.
B: Trying to reverse out and making it worse.
It's not my finest hour by a long shot.
But seriously, you want all 3000+ SG101 members to buy the Frankie & the Poolboys album? Do we get discount for that?

Yes, I'm sure Brian said that just to anger you, and it had absolutely nothing to do with how much he likes the album.

3,000+ people might have registered for this site since it opened but I'd venture a guess that there's no more than 500-750 regularly active posters. "Everyone here" doesn't include all the one-and-done posters who left years ago.
Here's the "Best of '07" and "Best of the decade, '00-'09" threads. Some albums pop up on the vast majority of the lists, like, say, The Thunderchiefs' Dig for the '07 lists. or the Frankie & the Pool Boys album and Satan's Pilgrims' _Psychsploitation _ for the decade list.
If I hadn't heard anything from those albums and I had even a passing interest in this genre, that would be cause enough for me to search them out.

Thanks for posting that Ferenc. Now I have to relearn Ewa in the right way. (Next up Amber Waves?)
And yes, for those of you who don't have it... Buy the Frankie & the Pool Boys CD, TODAY! (Also buy one for a friend or relative.)

Icetech, I really don't mean to pick on you here, since I think there are many people on SG101 that are the same, so I hope you won't take the following personally, but....
A statement like the above just blows my mind. There's been a LOT of talk on SG101 about the Frankie & the Pool Boys album in the year and a half since it's come out, and I think the overwhelming agreement has been that it's a simply amazing surf CD, one of the best of 2008 (which also saw other amazing releases, such as Los Twang! Marvels "Jungle of Twang", the Barbwires' "Searider", the Atomic Mosquitos "Meltdown", three of my favorites), if not of the past decade. I just don't understand why people that hang out on SG101 would not want to pick up modern surf CDs about which people rave at great length. If you're not sure whether you'd like a particular CD, it's easy enough to hear a few songs on the band's myspace page, or hear samples of all the songs on CDBaby or Amazon or whatever. It's just very frustrating for me as a surf musician to see the lack of willingness to actually support even the very best in the genre by the very people that are here often and that one would think are the ones for whom those of us making music are trying so hard to make it as good as we can. We struggle to sell even a thousand copies of a CD, just to cover most of the costs of making the CD and hopefully have enough money to make another. Meanwhile, there are all these people on SG101 who are supposedly fans of the genre that turn a cold shoulder....
It's hard not to get discouraged....
Anyway, off my soapbox, and back to this amazing and fun video: Ferenc, I very much hope we'll see much more in the future! Thanks for all your offort!

Why would i take that personally? You are frustrated that you can't sell cd's i get that...
BUT.. some of us work 70+ hours a week and get to scan the forums quick once or twice a day.. when im not here the thought of buying cd's or worrying bout what music to get pretty much is out of my head in 30 seconds and im back to working.
PLUS... im sure others have experienced being told how amazing a cd is, wasted our money to not like it.. Hell, 10 million people will tell you adam lambert is just AMAZING!!
But after hearing that song on the video i was planning on ordering a copy asap.. sometimes work comes ahead of ordering cd's..

We actually do OK (Sandstorm is now in the second pressing, for example, and Carpe Noctem has sold well so far). I'm frustrated that there's a lack of support for - or sometimes even interest in - good modern surf music as a whole by the people that say they are fans of the genre.

Let's not forget the "101" part of SG101. This is a place to learn and share knowledge about surf music-- guitar playing, gear, history, current events. It is a credit to Brian's vision that he set up and continues to run a site with learning as the fundamental intent.

That would be great actually. I am sure Sean can arrange a volume discount for 3000 or even 300.

Will- good for you for using the Tascam trainer instead of tabs, you will be be a much better player for it in the short and long run. As for the Adult Beverage, sure! Hopefully I will have a nice surprise for you at the SG101 Con!

I don't think anybody around here has recommended Adam Lambert But, I agree with Ivan, there is a lot of great new surf music happening and it is frustrating that many members of the site aren't checking out current bands.
Thanks to everybody who has checked out this video, and if this is first time you heard "Ewa on the Beach", that's fine with me. Enjoy!

I wasn't always clear on the name myself- I initially thought 101 was indeed the typical intro course designation you see in in most colleges, but then wondered if "Surf Guitar 101" was a play on the album by the Super Stocks, "Surf Route 101".
Great video though, Ferenc, I've been loving these. I'm pretty convinced your cat is not a Surf fan though.
