Third wave, from San Francisco, released four full-length albums between '92 and '97 (and then a collection of radio recordings in '01). Don't think they've been active in at least a decade. Heavily influenced by the Shadows and exotica, progressive in some sense but not much in common with other progressive acts like the Mermen or Slacktone except for having a unique sound that's not traditionally surf.

My favorite by them is their album Nomad, though Surfmania and Guitar Noir are really good, too.

See their full discography here.

Hope that helps!

Recently, I mentioned them in another thread. Their CD's may still be available (I have them all). Contact Robert Walker at Heyday Records:

heyday@heyday.com

He may be able to hook you up (he also distributes The Duo Tones).
A while back, I found the same Korg rack-mount delay that Miles uses and got it for Robert to use in his studio.
We regularly play "Surfmania" at breaks on our gigs.
A re-issue of their stuff would be nice.

If you like the Aquavelvets, you might also enjoy the Mel-Tones.

Happy Sunsets!

I don't make that connection-- maybe The Blue Hawaiians or The Vanduras(?)

Ivan, you are a little off with the AVs live shows dates. The band played as a big group through '05 (when I was playing with them there were 6 members). After that they reduced to a trio (Mles, Michael and Shig), mostly playing only at the Park Chalet. Eventually Michael stopped doing the live shows, and then they stopped playing altogether about 2 years ago. Miles has 3 solo CDs available, slightly above demo quality, but lots of good songs on them.

Ah, OK, thanks Ferenc. So, why no new band recordings in all that time?

I forgot you played with them for a while. How long did that last?

I have one of them (Songs from the Tiki Hut or something?). Nice mellow stuff, but it would have been better as a band release, with more live instruments.

I used to really like the AVs. I still always listen to them on beach vacations - really fits the mood! Smile

Just guessing, but I'd say that they no longer had a label deal.

Two years. I was great fun, and Miles writes really interesting songs, so it kept me on my toes. They are all great guys. Michael is an unbelievably solid bass player, he really leads the rhythm section.

They really nailed the mellow vibe thing. I just wish the albums had real drummers and/or real drums. But, that's they way it is.

Yep, Miles and Michael ..both cool guys and excellent players..Miles has a unique writing style that can be very visual...a few years back they did some "pool party" gigs at The Flamingo Hotel in Santa Rosa..full bar..food goodies to buy etc..lot of fun...Michael later told me it was the only gig they ever got fired from for NOT playing loud enough..hah..I thought it was just right...

thanks for the info, guys. Cool

Love the Aqua Velvets too.

I think there are a couple cdrs available from the band of Live recordings from the poolside gig, and from the Beach Chalet.

Maybe also an "Acoustic Surf" one as well

Miles put out two live Aquavelvets CDR recordings:

"Cool and Waydown at the Beach Chalet" (acoustic), and
"Cool and Waydown at the Park Chalet" (electric).

Both are well worth getting: It's nice to hear them with real drums and percussion instead of the drum machines on the studio albums.

There's also a great live radio broadcast 2-CD set, "Radio Waves" which
is from about 3 different broadcasts, and is very good.

There is also a fairly recent release, "Reaching Shangri-La", which I
like, but not nearly as much as the live CDR's, and "Radio Waves"

Lat time that I looked the Aquavelvets' website was still up. You can e-mail Miles and buy the CD's direct from him. I think CD Baby still has them for sale as well. I think all their CD's are worthwhile.

My favorite is Guitar Noir, I prefer the darker sounds and I still cover Aqua Nova, Venetian Silhouettes and Spanish Blue from that. Surfmania seems overall more Exotica/Hawaiian to me than surf music. I saw the Aqua Velvets in Santa Barbara as a four piece, a very quiet affair with only a half dozen people in attendance. Still, they got a few up and dancing. I think they played less than a hour then a blues act took the stage, that's when I left. I bought Songs from the Tiki Hut too, the kind of island music you could play at the beach on acoustics.

NPR's All Things Considered and Morning Edition will from time to time use AV snippets between stories.

Amazing what you learn on this board! Thanks for the enlightenment!

A vote for "Nomad".

Don't forget their 5th release, Backflip Louie and the Pool Party Pagans. It is really awesome and different from their other releases. It's pool party surf. They also have a new album out "Reaching Shangri-la" which i don't have.

If I had to rank the albums from best to worst it would be:

Radio Waves (their live tracks are a great way to get into their music)
Surfmania
The Aqua Velvets
Backflip Louie and the Pool Party Pagans
Nomad
Guitar Noir

I agree with Ferenc. The Mel-tones are awesome, but I don't see any similarity to the loungy and exotic Aqua Velvets and the high speed neo-trad surf of The Mel-tones. The Blue Hawaiians and the utterly amazing Vanduras are a better fit. Also Ferenc, don't be so modest. Pollo Del Mar is right up that alley as well. In fact I'd say the Aqua Velvets are a gateway drug to Pollo Del Mar. At least for me they were.

Tales Of Absurdity

When I mentioned the Mel Tones, I was not thinking about songs similar to the Aqua Velvits. Since the post was about "discovering" a new group, my reply was to suggest one more band to "discover". As posted the two do not have much in common except for some great music.

Happy Sunsets!

Sorry to bump an old thread. I've been listening to Guitar Noir, over and over again, and while I generally steer clear of the loungy, mellow side of surf, I really get into this album.

Thing is, the drums... On most of songs they sound alright, but on a couple the ride sounds tinny and metallic, like a crappy 80's drum machine. Is it programmed? Is there a back story of some sort? Or did they just not have a drummer lying around? Mr. Green

Thanks,

-Preston
