Permalink Aggressive Sounding Surf Songs for a setlist

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

I know there was a thread around here somewhere about aggressive sounding surf/instrumental songs, but I cannot find it.

I am putting together an all surf/instrumental band, all members are long time blues musicians, and are interested in starting up a surf band with myself on lead guitar. My vision is a band playing a more aggressive style of surf music, starting off playing covers, and moving on to original material, once we get established and some good practice hours in. What I am looking for are some examples of some harder sounding surf songs to include for a potential set to start learning as a unit, and eventually start playing out.

Some examples of songs I have learned, just looking for some other tunes to get into, the latest one i was really excited about learning is Everybody up by the fenderIV (very fun one to play) and a very good example of the type of songs I like.

  1. The Surfaris-Point Panic

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

half of the stuff you posted I would not consider Aggressive Surf

He was just listing songs he'd learned - not necessarily aggressive ones.

... I hope. Because if anyone thinks "Bustin' Surfboards" is aggressive, there are not enough 8Os in all of the internets to truly convey the WTF-ness.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

oh ok, I musta missed that.

I was also thinking that
Bullwinkle pt 2, (as cool as a song it may be)
and Pipeline,Perfidia, and Lullaby of the Leaves were not to aggressive either.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

What could be more agressive than busting a bunch of stuff?

To clear things up, that was just a list of songs, I was brainstorming, that I know pretty much how to play, and could possibly be included in a set, and In my opinion would be a good starting point. They are definately not all fast /aggressive tunes.

Los Straitjackets "Tailspin". There's Miserlou, Squad Car, & IT!

Everybody Up always sounds Ska-like to me.

Thats Because of the Rhythm guitar being in the upbeat.

I've always wondered if the guys in the Fender IV had heard some of the early Jamaican Ska.

If not, where the hell did they get it from.

Randy Holden said in the interview (maybe with Brian and me? I forget now) he knew nothing about ska - he got it from the old Russian folk music.

thanks Ivan,
that would make sense too.

It was indeed from that interview Brian did with Randy - you can find it here.

Here is the exact quote, Jeff:

5) Were you influenced by ska music, since Everybody Up and Malibu Run both have a ska-sounding rhythm guitar part? Or was it somebody else in the band? Or maybe purely a coincidence? If it was you, how were you introduced to it?

It's an old Russian Folk rhythm with passion - now they call that Ska - what does ska mean? Vodska?

Russian Folk Rhythm eh? I can see that now but before reading that I was always a bit perplexed (and fixated) on how they came to be playing ska way back then.

Thanks for that Ivan.

Wow.

Of the 44 songs mentioned in the thread so far (WDR's on there twice, Tonetti), I'd rank "Tailspin" #42 or so. Maybe even as high as #41.

I think you should listen to Agent Orange's covers of Pipeline, etc., on their first CD. That's about as aggressive as it gets.

If you're looking for edge and power, there are plenty of modern bands that fit the bill. Check out Mister Neutron, Slacktone, Davie Allan, etc.

My own band the Nematoads takes out a lot of aggression in some of our tunes. You can hear some samples at CDBaby:

Spy Car Mechanic: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/nematoads2
Every song is edgy and aggressive. Lotsa fuzz.

Five Guns West: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/nematoads
Mostly spaghetti westerns, but a few of the songs like Dos Diablos, Capoburro, Distant Drums, and Bandera are pretty darn edgy.

There's lots of good punk-surf bands out there that play with a strong sense of aggression and edge.

This was a list off the top of my head, without any ranking system, just jotting down the songs I could think of.

Ivan: Thanks for the fenderIV link, very cool, Interesting to know that he dropped to D on everybody up.

I know he says that, but I really doubt it. A lot of time has passed since then, and memories get twisted. We play the song in E in standard tuning, and it makes a LOT more sense that way than trying to play it in a dropped D tuning. Mar Gaya, on the other hand, was definitely in a dropped-D turning. Use your ears!
