I just spent some time on the Library of Congress US Copyright Office web site. It appears to be a simple process to copyright an entire album of your original music electronically through this site. The cost is $35. You fill out the form, pay the $35, then upload your songs.
http://www.copyright.gov/eco/
But, is that all you need to do? Or, do you also need to submit to BMI, etc. , and if so, why? I wish there was a site that guides you step by step through copyright, getting a UPC bar code, best sites to distribute for you (cdbaby), all the other stuff, etc. etc.
I didn't see a place on the form to select agreement to podcast friendly authorization/Common License approval. Don't you have to agree to that in your copyright?
Thanks.

I'm a little foggy on Copyrights, but if you have a CD printed up and available, then your music is already copyrighted.

Your registration with the government copyright office is really as much as you need to do. I don't even go that far.
BMI, ASCAP, SEASAC, don't have anything at all to do with copyright. They are royalty collecting organizations. They track royalties due and collect them & then pay the publisher and possibly the artist.
Honestly, unless you know that your songs are going to be used on tv, radio, movies, etc., you might consider not bothering with BMI, etc., until know your music will be used in those mediums.
Getting a barcode is easy. If you go with CDBaby they can set you up with one for a small fee.

Submitting it to BMI, etc. gives you a way to collect money.
