My signal chain for recording guitar looks like this:

guitar> Fender RI Reverb Unit> EH tremolo pedal> Fender Bassman 50> 2x12 Celestion cabinet>

Huh, DP, youhave the trem pedal between reverb and amp? how does that work for you? - also, is that an EH Pulsar? How do you like it ?

You know, I have been experimenting with the EH Pulsar tremelo placement...I have had tried it before the reverb and after the reverb...
I think I liked BEFORE the reverb best.

I was tring for an old-time Fender amp with reverb and tremolo type of sound...

It is a Pulsar...and I'm still not sure what I think of it yet. I have found some decent sounds in there....but the controls are not as intuitive (or simple) as I would like...I mean, I guess I was looking for the sound and simplicity of an old optical Fender style amp tremelo...and the Pulsar isn't that. So, the jury is still out on the Pulsar.

I think that the main issue I have with the Pulsar is that the control knobs seem way too sensitive...small changes in control knob position have dramatic effects on sound character...it's almost like the knobs are set to some sort of logarithmic scale rather than a linear scale!

I have a different tremelo coming soon from ebay...and if it gives me what I'm looking for, the Pulsar might just be sold on ebay or become a real cool doorstop for my music room...

DP, my sentiments exactly ... to weird to dial in - great possiblities for freakin' out in the studio, but, thats not really my thing Wink

just last weekend I bought a carl martin surf trem - came across it, it's fairly new, never saw it before. it's in the new cheaper line from carl martin - I tried it and was sold more like fender amp trem than any box i ever tried. and it looks gorgeous.

I like the pulsar too,but it's not really a surfy trem - it's more for in an indy band like the dandy warholls - mho of course.

still wonder about how you conect it, with me, everything goes before the tank?

Re: effects placement in the signal chain...I usually like to run any effects (for example tremelo pedal) before the reverb unit... guitar>effect pedal> reverb unit>amplifier...

Sorry for the confusion in the earlier post....I think I got it backwards.

jeez, can you hum the twilightzone theme ? ...

apart from looking cool, it sounds pretty damn good. simplicity, it pulses rather than chops off - even with the triangualr setting, I couldn't get that pulsar to actually pulse at all.

another thing which bothered me with that pedal was the volume drop when engaged, sucks when playing live. might be the fact that the pulsar is true bypass - the CM isn't and possibly it drops too if you connect it true bypass.

anyway, i haven't spent more than an hour or so with it yet, but so far Ilike it way better than the pulsar, or the Greorge Dennis ping pong I have, or the boss mybassplayer has.

let's start a shootout thread somwhere. I'll see if i get too it later today.

hi. it's a cheap and dirty way for me.

this is what i use:
1. old sansamp analog amp modeller
2. dunlop tremolo pedal - its stereo with one input and two outputs. use it just to split the signal
3. little roland microcube amp on clean setting.
4. IBM T43 laptop (my office comp)
5. Audacity recording software (it's free and excellent!!!)

this is how it works:
1. guitar goes into sansamp
2. sansamp goes into dunlop tremolo
3. tremolo goes one lead to IBM, one lead to Roland.

I split the signal between laptop and roland to be able to hear what i'm recording because playback from my laptop is delayed during recording.

that's basically it.

Before the the discussion had turned to tremelo and effects, no one had mention using Pro Tools. Which is by the easiest interface to use in my opinion. One because it doesn't revolve around all the plug-in trash the other softwares use for selling points. It does come bundle with some lite version of Ableton's Live and Reason for those wanting to do the programming and loop base thing. But they aren't necessary. Two - most mastering studios can take your existing ProTools files, clean them up and get you a master that is redbook standards ready for duplication.

Sure the downside to ProTools is that is hardware dependent. But the market has growing to make hardware options much available through other vendors and to meet most budgets.

If you had ever used a cassette 4-track in the past. ProTools will be like a walk in the park for those wanting to record at home.

I use a Digi 002 control surface with some outboard tube preamps for mics. I would recommend T-racks plug-in for anyone doing home recording with any software. It is totally worth its price for EQ'ing and mastering.

I have had worked with Sonar/Cakewalk, Cubase and Adobe Audition/Cool Edit. They will all get the job done. But for ease and speed, ProTools was the one for me.

redd tyde has it right. Pro tools is a great program. i run through an mbox 2 which is pretty simple little unit. I can mic my fender amp or plug straight into the mbox. When I do that there is a program called amplitube which will make you have to take time off of work just to play with it( i did) You can pretty much make any amp you want. The t racks is just splendid also. Pro tools takes a little practice to learn the ins and outs(or a lot of practice if youre a computer dope like me) But the sound quality and add ons are worth it. that's my 2 cents.
