Seller didn't want to ship to Sweden although it didn't matter in the end as I wouldn't have bid anything near the final sale price anyway.

Seller could have at least had the courtesy to take better, higher quality pictures of the illustrations.

Yeah, that would have been nice although this was better than nothing since I had only seen the front cover prior to this auction. I have the first two issues of the different SurfToons mag (1965) which have contributions by Griffin but what makes the Surfer Toons book special is that it's all Griffin cartoons, drawn in 1964. Petersen's CarToons magazine had been around since the late 50's and it puzzles me why they waited until 1965 before launching their SurfToons mag.

Man, I love those Peterson mags... SurfToons, CarToons, CycleToons! Pete Millar's Drag Cartoons are awesome too.

There's a nice collection of SurfToons covers at this link... http://www.georgetrosley.com/surftoons.html

Here's one with Hot Curl on the cover...

Thanks for the link Norman! It also shows that while the surf music craze only really lasted a few years in the early 60s, that the aesthetic and movement that went with it took a while to catch on for the rest of the country and lasted much longer. I remember a lot of stickers, models, and Hang Ten shirts etc from when I was a kid in the midwest and I was born in '67. It was a quick spark in some ways but had a lasting undercurrent (heh).

For sure. Though the "surf craze" (not to be confused with the sport of surfing) and surf music lost its steam when those pesky moptops showed up, this kind of stuff stuck around for quite some time and to a certain extent never went away. I too remember lots of this kind of imagery still showing up on t-shirts, model kits, etc, in the mid-70's when I was a kid.

The price has actually gone down a lot on the 64' Surfer Toons special edition, I sold a copy in 2006 for well over 500 bucks. Crazy !
Rick Griffin was so incredible, I love his earlier stuff simply because I dig all of that SoCal 60's surf/hot rod art, but his later Biblical stuff was just unreal on a technical level...

There are currently two copies of the 1964 Surfer Toons comic book up for auction on eBay. Starting bids are $195 and $275 and my guess is both will go unsold.

my brother and my husband both had this back when it was new. one copy burned up in a house fire and the other burned up in a trailer fire.

i would definitely refrain from buying another copy then!
