I don't even think you can debate this. Not surf. —"as he stepped into the stealthy night air... little did he know the fire escape was not there" https://www.facebook.com/reluctantaquanauts/ |

I said surf, cause I think of it as surf music. Sorry, not much for the politics. — |

Surf Music was officially born from the early efforts of Dick Dale and The Bel Airs, approximately 1961-62. Duane Eddy, The Ventures, The Fireballs, Wailers, et al, pre-dated surf music by several years. Were they, however, influential in the later development of "surf" Absolutely, but there remains an important distinction. It has nothing to do with "politics" but rather with being accurate in what label one applies when discussing Instrumental, versus Surf music. |

I know Duane Eddy was recording in through a huge tank somewhere here in Phoenix to obtain the reverby sounds. But when he played live, what did he do to emulate the reverb? Was he not having hits before the outboard tanks were produced? —Plus! Other stuff not surf: https://soundcloud.com/jamesmileshq |

I really have no idea about his recording methods, but there were amps with built-in reverb before Fender did it. Also, he could have recorded in an "echo-chamber". And live he may not have used reverb. It is not a guarantee. Also, other amps have reverb as mentioned earlier. |

Twang! Influenced the style too. I love Duane Eddy's music. Gotta get that Water Skiing album! —It's go-go, not cry-cry. |

Wow its cool seeing a 3 year old thread again. And a post from Spanky. This thread does remind me I've been meaning to pick up some Duane Eddy albums. I heard Eddie Bertrand say at the 2008 convention that Duane Eddy was his biggest musical hero when he was a kid. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

I tried to tell some guys on HC that Duane Eddy wasn't really a surf guitarist, but one of the guys who laid the foundation for surf. They wouldn't believe me. — |

have half a dozen LPs by 'surf' guitar bands from the 60s not because they were surf(whatever that meant to a Brit in the 60s)but because I preferred instrumentals over the mersey sound. Anyway....The Ventures,Sufaris,Livley Ones....all had covers of Duanes music... believe them to be surf records as they all had pictues of waves on 'em.... Rebel Rouser,Shazam,Yep,40 miles of bad Road etc etc...so he must have influenced somebody....I suppose. Check out the golden hits shown above...his version of Honky Tonk ??.....great. |

Its not the repertoire but delivery, made from attitude and gear. We find that the southern california surf sound of 61 - 65 has its unique stamp. But by now I am ready to admit that its obvious not everybody is able to hear the differences. Eddy played Honky Tonk - whats that R&B or Country? Bands played Offenbachs Can Can or Wagners Wilhelm Tell Overture without being classical. I don't want to sound pedantic, but as someone who likes both Wagner and Rossini, I'm compelled to point out that the overture you refer to was written by the latter. |
