Fender MIM Telecaster next to Vox AC4TV8

"Music is an extension of my soul"-Dick Dale

I love the sound of a Tele for Surf music. Put it on both pickups and you are there.

Yeah, a Tele with Bigsby is great for surf!

Every word is like an unecessary stain on silence and nothingness.

I've considered putting a Bigsby on my Tele, but I'm worried it's going to affect the tone/tuning stability. Right now if I absolutely need to do some of those whammy bar tricks, I'll just bend the neck.

I'm glad to see some people here who like the Telecaster, I always loved it for it's reliability and for it's versatility.

I've got a Strat body laying around, It's going to become my "Surf Project". Needs new electronics, hardware, neck, everything. Basically it's just the body and I will be building from there. First thing I'm going to do is paint it "Surf Green" while I start buying parts. I'll post pictures of the process if you guys would like.

My Baby, original 1957 Stratocaster. Found in a pawn shop when I was 16.

Is that an original finish "Blackie"????? Very Nice, What's the Story on the Amp??????

Wow, nice strat, what year were you 16 anyway? (Not that I have any hope of finding a '57 in a pawnshop that I could afford.) That's a nice lacquered tweed too. So if it's a Bandy repro, how does the vibrato sound? Does it happen to have reverb on it too?

I've put bigsbys on teles before and had very few issues with tuning. On one of them I put a graphite nut, that tele had the best tuning stability. The other I used a bone nut and just used some graphite nut sauce. That tele had the superior tone of the two.

I wouldn't give it a second thought. I have four Gretsch guitars with Bigsby vibratos and they are superb in every way including tuning stability. Just make sure that the nut is properly cut.

I was 16 in 1969, took a buddy of mine to see a friend of his in the hospital, had a hour to kill so went to get something to eat. There was a pawn shop in the strip mall so I went in and there it was hanging there. He wanted $250.00, all I had on me was $125.00( just cashed a paycheck that morning)
Talked him down and to my price, grabbed the guitar and RAN!!!
It is all original except there was no case, so I have it in a '68 Strat case.
We have been through a lot together and she still screams!.

The amp is killer, a '57 Tweed Bandmaster reproduction that we (Luxe-Tone) makes called the "Doob-B" (After Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers) All hand wired off the original schematic. One of the most unique sounding amps I have ever played, because of the mismatched impedance. Fender put 4 ohm output transformer with 3 speakers. It gives it a great breakup, think "China Grove".
Also Joe Walsh gave Pete Townshend one that he used on "Who's Next". I have always loved the sound so I decided to included a reproduction in the amps we build. Original Tweed Bandmaster did not have a tremelo or reverb, I am a purest!
For all the Surf Musicians we offer a great '63 Bassman reproduction called Blondie-B and a Stand alone Reverb Unit called "Slinky"
Check out all the Luxe-Tone Amps:

Next we are going offer a "Big Box" Tweed Twin.

I have an Ibanez Artcore with a "vintage style vibrato", basically, a Bigsby knock off. I love the sound of it, but am worried about a Bigsby on a Telecaster taking out some of the bite and twang, which I definitely do not want. How dramatic was the difference in tone before and after the Bigsby? I'd like that difference to be as minimal as possible, while still allowing the usage of vibrato.

Well, I've just been educated- I didn't even know the BM was around during the late 50's tweed era with the Bassman, I thought it was introduced as a piggyback in the early 60's all this time. Anyway, great looking amps & tank, and also that's one of the best "steal of a lifetime" stories I've heard in a while.

I was surprised too! I knew the Bandmaster was originally a 3 X 10 combo, but though it originated during the "Brown" era. The "Brownies" are highly sought-after.

Fender Cyclone II

remora1, thanks for posting the Cyclone II and the demo. It has inspired
me to complete my long delayed "short-scale-strat" project. It's based on
a 2003 Cyclone (24 3/4 scale neck), it took some time to find a yellow one.
From ebay I found a loaded pickguard from a AVRI 57 Strat (57/62 pups)
Made a new pickguard and put the two together this weekend. As you
would expect it sounds very Stratocaster like, I really feel comfortable
playing the shorter scale neck.

Here's some info on the Cyclone: http://www.jag-stang.com/2007/08/12/what-happened-to-the-fender-cyclone/

Wow! I love it! Nice project RecRoomSurfer!

Every word is like an unecessary stain on silence and nothingness.

Very nice build, RecRoomSurfer! I've become a big fan of the "longer" short scale neck too. At 24", my Mustang always felt a tad too short - the 24 3/4" length on the Cyclones feels perfect to me. I've never owned a Strat (the few times I've played one I never fail to knock the volume knob down to zero), but I sure wouldn't mind having a "Cyclocaster" like yours!

Looks like he's doing a floater on a tiny wave in front of a huge one. Or is he bailing awkwardly? Yet, the tail spray is odd in any case.

First of all my apologies for my wretched photography. I really must get a tripod. Or stop drinking.

Current fave guitar, DeArmond Starfire Special:

Aria Pro 2 Wildcat. Don't laugh. This is actually a very good guitar. Good Strat tones on the neck and mid pickup, good humbucker, reliable whammy. I used this for about half the tracks on my band Space Party's forthcoming album. Plus it only cost $140! Good old Cash Converters.

image

Ibanez Roadstar. Possibly even better Strat sounds than the Aria, except tuning is a nightmare.
