* I don't seem to like The World is Waiting For Terry quite as much as most, but it's certainly not a bad album.

Me neither, I'd sub it with Rashomon!

I got a pretty good run down on Terry's career which I will go into later.

((edit:^^ THIS IS NOT THE CORRECT COVER FOR THE CD< SEE BELOW))

As for the Rashomon album, my friend Sasaki, who has been a life long fan of TT, and has interviewed him many many times- NEVER HEARD THIS ALBUM! After he listened to it, he believed it was from the early 70s, a time when TT's career was near nadir, and quite possibly sold miserably.

Personally, I am only familiar with it due to the kindness of Zak, who sent me a copy. For this I am eternally grateful as this is one of the best albums I have ever heard in my life, definitely in my 10 ten.
So, the fact that such a brilliant album is essentially unknown in Japan is incredible, but that fact must weighed with the plight of instrumental music which was just as unpopular in Japan as it was anywhere else.

Warren, do you own the actual LP?

I picked up a label promo LP with the title track (and a bunch of 70's Enoch Light 8O) for $10 versus paying what the LP usually goes for. It's far and away my favorite song from the album.

It's a fascinating mix of 70s heavy rock and eleki - I have another LP of his from about the same time period that doesn't pull it off nearly as well.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Zak gave me a copy of Rashomon as well. I absolutely love that album. Japanese prog-eleki at its finest! Laughing
One of my favorite albums as well. Its pretty dense in comparison to his earlier stuff, but it is an incredible piece of work.

You might want to replace that mid 60s Yuzo Kayama EP with a picture of the actual 1972 Rashomon album. Wink

Touching on the other current eleki thread, my five favorite Terry albums (not necessarily the best, but the ones I enjoy the most) are:

  1. Seicho Terauchi Bushi
  2. Golden Concert
  3. Manatso No Umi Wo Buttobase
  4. Let's Go Bushi
  5. Let's Go Terry

And the five albums I'd recommend as the best intro to the style:

  1. Sharp Five - Haru No Umi
  2. Terauchi Takeshi - Seicho Terauchi Bushi
  3. Yuzo Kayama - s/t (or the Black Sand Beach collection)
  4. Terauchi Takeshi - Let's Go Bushi
  5. V/A - Tokyo Eleki Battle (or V/A - Beat A Go-Go)
5 1/2. Royal Fingers - Wild Eleki Deluxe

Definitely interested to see what others would recommend.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Warren nailed my favorite Terry albums as well with the exception that I'd include Rashomon.

As far as eleki in general, Warren's list is great. I'd also add a couple of my favs though:

Yoshio Kimura - Wakai Saundo (Young Sound). This album has great great Jazzmaster tone
The Spacemen - Cherry Viewing a Go Go (I think that's the correct translation? Lot's of drippy reverb on this one).

That was the cover that was supplied when I got the disc. My bad.

I have largely ignored TT's career because I was really only familiar with the later portion of it, which is pretty sad. Lots of slow melancholy covers, blech. Also his bloated appearance does not come across as "rock". I am very sorry for judging him.
I had no idea what a ferocious player he can be. (What would you say about DD if you had only heard him sing "Fever"?). When the Surf Coasters were here last year I was trying to talk to Shigeo about his guitar influences, talking about people I was familiar with, like Yuzo Kayama. But the language barrier was too great for him to talk about TT. Anyway, after listening to more of TTs music, I am sure that TT was the biggest influence on young Naka. The fact that TT spent his formative musical days and still currently lives in Yokosuka, gave him local hero status which I'm sure was a big impression on young Naka.
Anyway, I have learned quite a bit from the discussions and expertise of the SG101ers, and am happy to say that my musical horizons continue to broaden, and I'm very happy to have TT in my life.

Here's just some of my favorite Terry guitar tunes. This man's musical output was massive. Just the tip of the iceberg. Gotta thank Garrett for introducing me to this stuff originally.

I also got the Rashomon album from Zak. In fact I think we all did. I really liked it. The first tune(or maybe it was the second) was one that stuck out for me. It's really good stuff. There's a song by TT on the Planetary Pebbles comp. that's pretty cool too.

This song is killer. It's probably my favorite Eliki tune that I've hear so far. That and "West Side Guitar". I really love "Golden Guitar" for the break at 1:42sec. I love his choice of notes at 1:47sec. It's just amazing. It makes me feel all funny like when I use to climb the rope in gym class Shocked

Killer indeed but it's not Terry... Wink

Thanks for the correction on that tune Klas. I always thought that was Terry but it's Nobuhiro Mine on guitar with The Sharp Five. He's doing an a amazing Terry impersonation with all due respect to him. I got copies of these songs on cassette originally and still haven't found many of them on CD or LP. When we did our Eleki tribute a Deke's Guitar Geek festival back in Jan '09 we learned the songs off of cassettes that Garrett made and in some cases we didn't know the name of some of the songs we performed! Wish I knew Japanese!!

Yeah, titles in Japanese definitely doesn't make things easier, haha. As for availability, I've got almost all of my eleki albums directly from Japan, either through CD Japan or Amazon Japan or through Japanese eBay sellers. That said, some of the quite recent CD reissues of several of Terry's 60s albums actually were available for a time from a handful of pretty big U.S. online stores at decent prices.

T H E ✠ S U R F I T E S

I'd be interested to know if "Golden Guitar" came out before or after Terry's album Let's Go Eleki Bushi - both are from '66 but I don't know what months specifically. There are some direct parallels with some of the leads in "Tsugaru Jyongara-Bushi" (especially the live version on Golden Concert) and it'd be interesting if it were a case of Terry taking inspiration from Nobuhiro Mine rather than the opposite.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.
