Permalink Does your guitar hang low?

New Topic

I just finished watching the Vara-Tones video posted in the "Internet Videos" forum, and I noticed that the guitarist in the reddish shirt wears his strat comparatively low to the rest of his band members, and this got me to wondering - how high or low do y'all keep your guitars when you play?

I am under the impression that I keep mine quite a bit lower than most surf players (and quite a bit higher than most punk players). I know Kenan, original bassist for the Lava Rats, wore his bass kind of like a bow tie, whereas my guitar was more like a belt buckle.

Also, what are your arguments for the height you put it at? I know that personally, I am much more comfortable tremolo picking with my arm in an almost-straight position, I'd much rather do that than keep my elbow at more of an angle, but that's just me. Rory from the Infrareds, for instance, is a MONSTER trem. picker, and I know he wears his guitars pretty high.

I can't find a strap long enough for how low I want my bass to hang,
but it does have its downsides when being too low, as it makes it harder to play some runs.

Standard height, if there is such a thing.

I play mine around gut-high. Being 6'6" - it's pretty hard for me to find a strap that sits the guitar where I want it, much less around my knees.

I wouldn’t want the guitar hang too low, it’d made me look like I don’t know how to push an extra hole in the strap. Having the strings in front of my navel is best on most guitars. Too much above or below is for posing purposes, of course some audiences don’t deserve any better.

when I was young and skinny and played punk rock, I was at the belt buckle too. Now that my wife's been feeding me so well all these years, I prefer to hike the guitar up a bit, say centered on the navel.

I still wear my guitar as I did 13 years ago (maybe just a tad lower today). I'm the one with the white Jaguar.

I wear mine a bit higher than navel level, which is quite a switch from my punk days. As a teen, I played bass, and it hung down past my belt buckle.

Mine's just high enough to be in the same place whether I stand or sit.

I still wear mine jacked up pretty high.

Hey KK
I live in Berlin one month a year (July) for work. I saw the Anacondas play at Wild at Heart in Kreuzberg last July. Were you there?

We should jam when I'm there next July.

My Precision I play from the hip, while I have my Johnson JG-622-E acoustic/electric more "sitting on my hip." I think the only one I've seen that's bigger than my JG-622-E is the Epiphone El Capitan...either way, it's a big box to get one's arm around. All of my electric guitars I typically have "sitting on my hip," while I play my accoustics higher, but not quite as high as what's considered typical for acoustic playing.

When I first bought my Ibanez Artcore AG75TBS (one that'll be going bye-bye, soon), I had to go with tying the strap behind the nut, since the size of my gut (at the time) and the location of the strap button were sorely incompatible. With the arched back of the guitar against my gut, I would've been trying to play it with the strings facing the floor, and it was then that I realized why some guitar straps also come with a "shoe string." Embarassed
