Right now my main axe is '59 Gretsch with 11 guage strings. I really want an official surf guitar, preferably a Jazzmaster. If and when I get it, I want to go for 13 guage strings. My question is, does the action have to be set up really high to accomodate strings this size?

Nope, if you have the proper amount of relief in the neck you can get the action pretty low. I'd recommend you have someone who knows what they are doing set it up.

Guitars all vary, on one Jaguar I have the action ridiculously low action with no string buzz, and my other I have to keep it a bit higher, but that could be because of fret wear. So there are many factors going into this, which is why it's probably best to have it set up by a tech.

dan:

I have my "Strat-style" guitar set up with 13s...the action is flat and low.

I would reccomend a luthier or a guitar tech to help re-set your guitar when you move to larger guage strings. There are several factors to consider such as: neck bow, string height, tremelo tension, intonation...etc...

good luck,

My hands get really sore sometimes when playing the guitar, so I'll need the action low when using 13's. Thanks for the input.
