Permalink Danelectro Echo

New Topic

I have MIM Classic Players Jaguar and play through an older Peavey 112 Bandit. I've got a Danelectro Spring King (Stock) which I like pretty much. I'm thinking about trying a Danelectro FAB D4 - SLAP ECHO. Anyone tried one of these?

Thanks

Charles

I had a Danelectro DJ-3 BLT Slap Echo. It does the rockabilly echo thing really well. I am sure the new one will cut it.

I read that echo is kind of like reverb

my fav echo ped right now is the electro harmonics #1 echo pedal. Nice echo and it dose a really cool bucket brigade thing that doesn't run away

Give me reverb or give me death!

the fab pedals break really easy, they do sound good though, the dano pp&j delay is great for a slapback sound cuz its got a lon/shot toggle its also a grat price ($25used $45 new) and allot more sturdy than any fab pedals, theres a ehx memory man toy (dont let the name fool you its all analog and True bypass it also doubles as a chorus) its got metal casing and under $75 best choice i think

My fav for slapback echo and vibrato is Electro Harmonix Classic Memory Man:

It's been around what seems like forever (1976), but now it's been discontinued and replaced with a couple of newer units (one still called the same name but different control layout, delay chip and very different sound, the other is a looper).

The chip that was used in the Classic version isn't made any more and these suddenly went from average to boutique in price. So they are rare, and pricey but worth it to me.

I'm really happy with the red repeat (analog echo). Though it probably costs more than the Danelectro pedal.

That is one cool looking pedal. I have a Digitech RP100 which has a repeat function that I'm toying with. It was only $50 Canadian, and offers various effect options. If echo and repeat are pretty much the same, I can use that.

Question for the group - what pedals help you obtain your surf sound?

Cheers

The 'repeat' on the red repeat is simply how many echoes you wish to set. It's a good pedal, strong casing and quiet.

At the moment I'm using the Red Repeat, a Dano tremelo pedal, an ancient MXR flange, and Fender amp reverb.

I have a stand-alone reverb unit but I'm still not satisfied with how it interacts with the pedals and amplifier. More experimentation is needed to get it to sound right.

Does the flang help with your surf sound?

Fender 63 Reverb Tank, EHX Classic Memory Man, Digitech RV-7, Barber Tone Press are what I use (max and match for different guitars on different songs). I was using a Digitech RP1000 but my son has it now...

Sure it does, but I use it very sparingly. For the most part I'm using the delay and reverb together.

This RP100a unit I have has three types of delay - Digital Delay; Analog Delay; Ping Pong Delay. Is one considered more surfy than others?

Hasn't been in the closet since I ripped the two spring out of it a few months back and put in a new Accutronics three spring unit to get a decent sound out of it. Plus in the coming winter months and the fact that it's tube, it'll double as a space heater... Laughing

Checkout the cheapo Danelectro pb&j. Now that's a fine fine delay'n'echo and it's almost free.

Three springs? doesnt that make it sound worse? Ben had one, he got rid of it cause it sounded like crap.

Three springs? doesnt that make it sound worse? Ben had one, he got rid of it cause it sounded like crap.

My two spring unit didn't even sound as good as crap when I bought it new. Just an overdriven, twangy, noisy unit. I did cap mods (took them out), I changed to all kinds of tubes (took them back out too) and finally tossed it in the closet because nothing helped.

Finally this "spring", I decided to fix it or junk it. Thus it went back to Fender a few times for repair before it finally sounded "ok" (distortion and static noise was a huge issue with it). They finally managed a repair that made it sound acceptable to me, but nowhere near the lush reverb I was ultimately after. But at this point I could use it at least. The last repair they did they said they didn't do anything, but when I go it home it sounded WAY better. And I didn't change anything here.

I noticed that Ben had mentioned swapping out the two spring for a three spring made it more "lush". So for $35, I had nothing to lose. Ordered a three spring from Accutronics, pulled out the 2 spring and swapped. I'd never go back to a stock two spring now.

I find now the dwell and mix controls actually do something (useable settings are much lower) and it sounds perfect to me on three of my guitars. On my other guitars I can use it, but it doesn't do anything for their sound as far as I am concerned. So for those, I use either the Digitech RV-7 or my Lexicon MX200. I like the variety any way.

I have a feeling that there was a component problem (or wiring) with the tank from the get go and the spring wasn't performing as it should. It's a perfectly useable tank now, but I do wonder about build quality these days. It's kind of a duck shoot whether you get a good one or not. Even when I go out guitar shopping I can grab three identical models from just about anyones product line and everyone of them sounds a little different when I A/B/C them.

Hi Mel,

Are there certain effect pedals that you've explored while looking for the surf sound you crave?

Thanks

Ah yep. Lots of them. Some of them are still sitting on my bookcase..:) And not always pedals, some rack mount units.

Ones I have tried (I usually buy them locally so I can return the less than stellar ones), some of these I still own (), the current ones I use (*):

Boss GE-7
Boss CS-3
Digitech RP1000 (my son uses it now)
Boss FRV-1
Echoplex EP-1
Roland VG99

()Dan Electro Spring King
(
)Line 6 Verbzilla
()Line 6 Echo Park
(
) Lexicon MX200 (rack based)

()Roland VG88 (I have a Godin xtSA midi guitar)
(
)Fender 63 RI Tank
()EHX Classic Deluxe Memory Man
(
)VooLabs Tremolo
()Barber Tone Press
(
)Digitech RV-7
(**)Behringer V-AMP Pro

All of these have their pros and cons and it's not meant to be a definitive list by any means. It's just things that I have tried, kept, or use that contribute to the sound that I want.
