Permalink 1985 Fender Jaguar japan oly white!

New Topic

So I got the Jag bug and stumbled on to this one on ebay.
1985 has basswood body and shielding plates in the routes I think only done with the super early japan ones. oddly enough the arm that came with it (pretty sure factory) is straight, the one with the black tip is a vintage or vintage replacement. I used to use it with the MIJ jazzmaster its the same speck as original and is about an inch longer. Really makes the trem feel smoother. Pretty clean for being almost 25 years old. Should match the jazzmaster when its done (later this week)
I dig it. Haven't had it long enough to run through the paces but so far big thumbs up!

US electronics? I know some of the early ones used the leftover parts from the US run.

I haven't ripped it apart yet. But it dose have the heavy shielding plates in the routs

scotstandard: the shielding plates appeared on many later Jaguars also. My CIJ is about 10 years old and has them, for example. And you can spot US pickups easily without disassembling the guitar.

Congrats on the new Jag. Very comfortable guitars. Thumbs Up

EDIT: Went with some tall bottle TADs per your recommendation. Thanks.

Weird, I've been really jonesing for a Jag myself lately, never did until now. Nice color, and MIJ no less (which I prefer). Nice.

That looks just like my 87 MIJ, same case too. I replaced the bridge and trem unit, the old one worked fine but now the arm stays in, no more teflon tape. I got mine for $200 in '87/88, "roadworn" with some body dings, still my favorite guitar.

I love that!

it also came with a buzz stop on it. I have always wanted to see what the "buzz" is all about so im checking that out. Im sure ill take it off.

As other bonus it came with a mustang bridge. I wanted one of those for my tele w/ bigsby. I hate the JM or Jag bridge on it. It works great on the tele!

I was only going to buy an oly white one. I think thats my color now.
White mosrite, JM, and now Jag!

Nice score, Scot! It's my favorite Jaguar color, too.

My dad bought me a new Oly White Jag in 1965 (which I still have). A few months after I got it, the nitro paint started discoloring badly where you rest your right arm. I contacted Fender who told me to send it back and they would refinish it. Being a clueless 17 year old, I asked them to redo it in sunburst, not realizing that a custom color Fender would be worth a lot more 40+ years later. But at least it didn't discolor and it still looks like new today. I've seen several other early Oly White Fenders that did what mine did, which probably explains why they switched to polyurethane finishes later on. I REALLY wanted to get an Olympic White Thin Skin Jag, but Fender never did them in that color.

In any event, if I had a do-over, I'd have left it Olympic White. Duh

Congratulations on your new acquisition!

First of all, I have not heard anything about early Fender Japan Jaguars using US-made parts. Not saying it didn't happen but I have not heard anything like this. However, if they did, the pickups would have staggered pole pieces if they were made post-1964 or so. The MIJ pickups have flush pole pieces.

If, for some reason, AVRI pickups were installed aftermarket this is easy to determine also from the top. The AVRI pickups have a flush, partially-beveled pole piece.

I didn't think that the Japanese Jaguar pickups were so bad as everyone said in mine, by the way; I changed them out to AVRI anyhow. YMMV.

Very nice looking Jaguar! Congrats.

Cool story woody. Still a killer guitar sunburst or white.

The pole pieces are raised, but i dont think staggered.

I like the pickups just the way they are.
JM or mosrite still kills it in everyday surf tone, but its got its own special thing to it for me

and i just did some experimenting with the buzz stop
I play a riff. Hit the tuner ped un screw the buzz stop and re tune and un mute the out put.
I did that about 12 times and the buzz stop def kills some tone. When i change strings on it ill pull it all the way off.

USA, CIJ, MIJ, whatever if it sounds good....its great!
